Gary K. Wolf, the author of the original stories that inspired ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit,’ recently told ImNotBad.com – a website focused on Jessica Rabbit news – that he has regained the rights to his characters, including Roger Rabbit. This means he’s now free to create his own Roger Rabbit projects and continue the stories himself.

Wolf regained ownership of his work thanks to a clause in copyright law that allows creators to reclaim rights after 35 years. He reported the process was surprisingly easy, as Disney didn’t object to him regaining the rights.

I anticipated a difficult process, and honestly, I wasn’t sure how things would go. But it turned out to be quite the opposite – everyone was respectful, polite, and direct. I’ve always had a great experience with Disney; they consistently provided excellent support and were always happy to work with my requests.

Now that the rights to his characters have returned, the author intends to revisit the world of Roger Rabbit and Toontown through new projects. He mentioned that fans often wondered why the original movie didn’t more closely follow the source material, the ‘Who Censored Roger Rabbit’ book – specifically, its use of speech bubbles and certain characters. He says exploring that approach is now a possibility, as is adapting his 2022 novel, ‘Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business’.

According to Wolf, the most advanced project currently in development is a live-action movie based on the book Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business. It was the first project they considered and began working on, and is the furthest along in the development process.

Currently, no film studios or production companies are officially involved in Gary Wolf’s plans for a Roger Rabbit universe, though he’s expressed a strong desire to collaborate with Disney once more. He envisions a partnership, bringing back key figures from the original film – including Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Frank Marshall, and Kathleen Kennedy – and ideally, having Charles Fleischer reprise his role as the voice of Roger Rabbit.
