Shawn Levy, known for directing Deadpool & Wolverine and his work on the Netflix hit Stranger Things, is taking on a major new challenge: a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm. The film, titled Star Wars: Starfighter, will star Ryan Gosling and is scheduled to come out in May 2027 – exactly 50 years after the original Star Wars premiered. Levy is excited to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved franchise, and he’s made it clear that Starfighter won’t simply continue the existing story. Instead, it will be a completely original story, not a sequel or prequel.
While discussing the final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, director Shawn Levy shared some news with Collider about the Star Wars movie he’s working on. He didn’t give away any details about the story, but he did reveal when, in the Star Wars timeline, the film will be set.
This isn’t a sequel or prequel; it’s a completely fresh Star Wars adventure with new characters and a new timeline. While it builds on familiar themes, the goal is to offer something new and exciting for both longtime fans and general moviegoers. It aims to capture the same sense of fun, adventure, and lightheartedness that made the original A New Hope so groundbreaking.
We’re constantly aiming for a specific feeling throughout the entire process. I’m working with an incredible team, including my cinematographer, Claudio Miranda, and Ryan Gosling, who is a key creative partner. It’s truly a dream project, and it feels like revisiting my childhood passion every day. I’m actually heading back to set tonight to continue filming on Monday. Lucasfilm has been wonderfully supportive, allowing me to explore new ideas without feeling restricted by past work. They appreciate the legacy of previous films but encourage originality.
Does “New” Apply in ‘Star Wars’?

Whenever a filmmaker tries to innovate within the popular sci-fi franchise, they often face pushback from dedicated fans. Director Levy is encountering this same challenge with Starfighter. While introducing new characters and a fresh timeline is promising, he needs to create something that both appeals to today’s viewers and respects the franchise’s history. That deep appreciation for the original stories remains the key to the franchise’s enduring success.
Recent efforts to revive the Star Wars franchise with new TV shows have been somewhat hit-or-miss. The Mandalorian has been successful because it feels true to the original films, while others, like The Acolyte, haven’t quite resonated with audiences. Andor stands out as a strong example; it didn’t rely heavily on existing Star Wars mythology, instead offering a fresh take on the overall feel of the universe, and that might be the key to success. Perhaps the trick is to take bold, new approaches that still fit within the Star Wars world. If Levy’s movie can achieve that balance, it has a good chance of being a hit.
