Just a couple of months after it ended, Star Wars has announced the return of its often-overlooked ‘High Republic’ series in 2026. In the Star Wars universe, nothing ever really stays gone – characters thought to be dead reappear, old storylines are revisited, and projects can be revived unexpectedly. Many fans believed the initial run of ‘The High Republic’ was finished, but they were proven wrong.
It seems reports of the High Republic ending were premature. Star Wars recently announced the series will return with a new book slated for release next year. This was revealed at a Lucasfilm Publishing panel during New York Comic-Con, despite the fact that the novel Trials of the Jedi, released this summer, was previously described as the conclusion of that storyline.
The new comic miniseries, Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures–Pathfinders, from Dark Horse Comics will transport fans back to the popular High Republic era of Star Wars.

George Mann’s latest books launch a fresh adventure, taking place two decades after the events of Phase Two of The High Republic. The story centers on a new group of Jedi Pathfinders tasked with uncovering the secrets surrounding a puzzling Jedi Master.
This is the first big High Republic release after Lucasfilm concluded the initial High Republic project in June, and it could suggest the popular Star Wars series isn’t finished yet.
Even though the comic series Trials of the Jedi has been presented as the conclusion of the High Republic storyline as we know it, many fans are wondering if the project will continue in a different form.
Don’t worry, this isn’t the last you’ll see of the High Republic! This story arc is finished, but the era itself will continue. We’re already working on new stories – think of it as the next chapter, beyond what we’ve already planned.
The first installment of the six-part Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures–Pathfinders comic series arrives in stores on March 11, 2026. What happens with The High Republic story after this new comic is currently unknown.
Why The High Republic Is Star Wars’ Most Underrated Series

A Star Wars Epic Fans May Never Experience
Star Wars’ High Republic series is easily the brand’s most underrated.
The High Republic saga, launched in 2021 with Charles Soule’s Light of the Jedi, has become a massive Star Wars story. It currently includes 139 comic books (not counting Pathfinders), 25 novels, 22 short stories, 6 original manga, and 5 audio dramas. You can find a complete reading order here.
These stories all add up to one larger, ongoing narrative – think of it like the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the Skywalker Saga, but taking place centuries before the original Star Wars movies.
The story unfolded in three parts, building to a grand finale this year with Trials of the Jedi. This was a unique project for the Star Wars universe, using multiple formats to tell its tale. However, many fans might miss it because it’s a book-based story, not a major movie or TV series.
If you’ve been hoping for another epic Star Wars story like the Skywalker Saga, this is it. The series maintains a consistent timeline, spanning 120 years and featuring different characters in each phase, with time jumps connecting them.
Though the story isn’t directly connected to the main Skywalker family saga, it shows how the Sith began to gain power – something we see later in the prequel movies. It also gives us a glimpse of what the Republic was like when it was at its strongest, before characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker were even born.
Near Limitless Storytelling Potential
As a huge cinema fan, one thing that really excites me about The High Republic – even beyond what we’ve already seen – is just how many incredible stories it could tell. It feels like the possibilities are endless!
The High Republic covers a massive period in galactic history – over 400 years, from around 500 to 100 years before the Battle of Yavin. To put that in perspective, the entire Skywalker Saga – all nine movies – happens in just about 60 years. The High Republic is a much, much longer stretch of time.
So, despite the many stories already set in the High Republic, there’s room for hundreds more if Lucasfilm chooses to expand the era.
So far, the story of The High Republic has mainly been told through books, short stories, audio dramas, and manga. Only two TV shows, Young Jedi Adventures and The Acolyte, have explored this era.
If Lucasfilm likes this idea of expanding the High Republic era, they should consider developing many different projects – including TV shows, movies, books, and games – to fully explore it.
The High Republic era feels like a huge, largely unused opportunity for the Star Wars franchise. While most stories focus on a relatively small 67-year period within the Skywalker family saga, there’s a vast amount of history both before and after that remains open for exciting new stories.
Hopefully, the new Pathfinders series marks the start of a fresh chapter for The High Republic. This could encourage both fans and Lucasfilm to invest in the story more fully.
