Since 2018, Nathan Fillion has starred as Officer John Nolan in the popular ABC police drama, The Rookie. Although he’s worked on other projects—like Superman directed by James Gunn, and the show Resident Alien where he plays a talking octopus—Fillion says he has a particular fondness for The Rookie.
Nathan Fillion recently told People magazine that he’s very attached to his role as Officer Nolan and can’t imagine life without the show, which has been nominated for five Emmys. He envisions himself still playing the character even after ten years, but he has also considered what he might do when the series eventually concludes.
Nathan Fillion playfully suggested that if he weren’t acting, he’d either teach acting – focusing on performing while dealing with distractions – or run a sunset boat party where everyone still called him ‘captain.’ He feels very lucky to be able to do what he loves – acting and storytelling – but also acknowledges the strange side of being famous. He believes the entertainment industry is a little bit crazy and unpredictable.
Nathan Fillion hopes The Rookie continues for another decade, and that it could lead to several spin-off shows. He envisions finishing his run on the series after ten years, potentially passing the torch to a new lead, and then enjoying a relaxed retirement. This retirement would include occasional visits to The Rookie set and involvement with four to seven successful spin-off series. When he’s not working on any of those projects, he’d like to spend his time at his beach house.
Another Spinoff is in Development
The show The Rookie previously spawned one spin-off, The Rookie: Feds, which starred Niecy Nash-Betts and James Lesure. However, it was canceled after one season in 2023. Now, another spin-off, The Rookie North, is gaining traction. As of July 2025, the network is seriously considering ordering a pilot episode. The series has been in development since 2024 with Lionsgate and 20th Television, and The Rookie‘s creator, Alexi Hawley, is writing and executive producing. Nathan Fillion is also on board as an executive producer. The Rookie North will be set in Washington state and will follow a male police officer starting a new chapter in his life.
Season 8 of The Rookie is expected to arrive on ABC around 2026. According to showrunner Alexi Hawley, the new season will pick up relatively soon after the events of Season 7. He stated it won’t be delayed by many months and that they want to quickly resolve some ongoing storylines for viewers.
The first seven seasons of The Rookie are streaming on Hulu.
