‘Man of Steel’ Star Defends Zack Snyder’s Approach to Superman

Actor Michael Shannon, known for his roles in films like The Shape of Water and Knives Out, and the popular Netflix series Death by Lightning, has publicly supported the superhero film Man of Steel. The 2013 film, directed by Zack Snyder, was a fresh take on the classic Superman story, showing the hero facing difficult choices and questioning his beliefs. Shannon played the villain, General Zod, a Kryptonian who clashes with and is eventually defeated by Superman. Recently, the actor has spoken out to defend the movie and Snyder’s vision for a reimagined Superman.

Actor Michael Shannon is currently publicizing his new movie, Nuremberg. In an interview with Vanity Fair, where he discussed memorable moments from his career, Shannon reflected on his role in Man of Steel. He stated that, even with the film being somewhat controversial, he’s still proud of his work in the DC Universe movie.

I truly enjoyed collaborating with Zack Snyder and being a part of this film. There’s been some talk that he only took the project for the money or that it’s different from his usual work, but I’m really proud of it. I believe the movie has a meaningful message.

I really just don’t understand why people resort to killing each other, no matter who they are. A big debate around this movie, and it was intentionally created by Zack Snyder, is that Superman shouldn’t kill anyone. So, I created a scenario where he had to choose between letting people die and killing me, and he chose to kill me. That understandably caused a lot of controversy and upset.

Superman’s Dark Turn in ‘Man of Steel’ Was Controversial (To Say the Least)

It’s well known that Man of Steel sparked a lot of debate when it was released. The film presented a Superman who was more complex and troubled than we’d seen before – a hero grappling with difficult feelings and facing the repercussions of his actions. According to Shannon, this felt like a natural progression for the character. Traditionally, Superman avoids killing, even his enemies. However, his choice to end Zod’s life made him feel more human to certain viewers.

Many fans disliked the darker take on Superman, and continue to be critical of Zack Snyder’s vision and where it led the story. While the ‘Snyderverse’ includes more than just a different Superman, a core part of it is a universe where heroes are flawed and morally gray—a big departure from the more classic, straightforward Superman we’ve seen recently.

Even though Man of Steel came out over ten years ago, people are still talking about it, especially with the new Superman movie now available. Some fans have become overly critical and consistently express negativity towards different versions of the character. While disagreement is normal when it comes to art, the endless debate about which Superman is ‘better’ is getting tiresome. There’s room for both versions to be enjoyed without fans constantly arguing over which one is superior.
