20 Years Later, Gundam Goes ‘Extreme’ With New Master Grade Gunpla Model Kit Releases

The Strike Freedom Gundam is arguably the most recognizable mobile suit from the Cosmic Era in the Gundam series, and its popularity is evident in the huge number of toys and collectibles available. Now, two new, incredibly detailed model kits are being released, offering very different building experiences.

I’ve been checking out the new MGEX 1/100 Strike Freedom Gundam kits, and they’re really impressive updates to a classic mobile suit. There are two versions coming out as part of the Master Grade Extreme line: one is a bright, clean white, and the other is a cool, darker dusky black – that one was originally only available for a limited time. Bandai is planning special release windows for these kits, so fans can collect all the different color variations of the Strike Freedom Gundam.

Gundam SEED Goes Black & White With New Bandai Strike Freedom Model Kits

I’ve been looking at Bandai’s MGEX 1/100 Strike Freedom Gundam [TWILIGHT COATING], and it really seems to be what the Master Grade Extreme line is all about. These kits take everything great about Master Grade models – lots of detail, layered finishes – and push it even further with incredibly complex engineering. It’s essentially an updated version of a previous Strike Freedom Gundam kit, originally released some time ago. What’s really striking this time is the color scheme; everything, from the outer armor down to the internal frame, is coated in a shimmering, pearlescent white. There are also some frosty blue accents in the joints. The result is a Gundam that looks almost angelic, but it’s still packed with the same incredible detail we’ve come to expect.

A special black version of the Strike Freedom Gundam model kit is coming soon, and it won’t be limited to China like it was in 2023. This Master Grade model, called the MGEX 1/100 Strike Freedom Gundam [Midnight Coating Ver.], features a metallic black finish that’s both shiny and subtly matte, achieved with multiple layers of plating and detailed stickers. It includes all the same details and weapons as the original white version, offering a fresh look for fans. The price will be around $430, and while it’s expected to be released by December 2025, the specific stores where it will be sold haven’t been announced yet.
