Okay, so I’m really excited to share that Simu Liu is officially coming back as Shang-Chi! He’s going to be joining the massive Avengers: Doomsday film, which is a huge deal because it’s the first time we’ll see him team up with the other major MCU heroes. But it’s got me thinking – how long will Shang-Chi stick around after this? Liu himself is now talking about what his future with Marvel might look like, and I’m definitely eager to hear what he has to say. It’s a thrilling time for fans!
How Does Simu Liu About His MCU Future Post-Doomsday?
Marvel Studios often signs actors to multi-picture deals and also arranges for them to appear in projects beyond their initial contracts – Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson are prime examples. So far, Simu Liu has only played Shang-Chi in the 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and in one episode of the animated series What If…? I believe there are many more stories to explore with his character, the Mandarin’s son, and I’m pleased to hear about Liu’s positive experience working with Marvel.
I would keep doing (Shang-Chi sequels) as long as I physically could.
Like many fans, Liu loves the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he’s been a longtime admirer of its interconnected stories. He’s expressed gratitude for being part of the franchise and recently shared how much he enjoyed working on Doomsday, particularly the chance to act alongside performers he’s admired for years. He discussed this further in an interview with ComicBook.
I recently joined the cast of a big Marvel movie, working with actors who’ve played their characters for over two decades. It’s a bit overwhelming joining their established world and building on the work they’ve done for so long – I’m honestly trying not to be too nervous! But I keep reminding myself that you just have to show up and do your best work, and not let self-doubt hold you back. It’s easy to let feelings of inadequacy become an excuse to avoid trying.
Simu Liu shared that he’s focusing on each Marvel project as it comes, hoping to inspire others along the way.
Let’s try to focus on the task at hand, rather than ourselves. What are we trying to achieve? What’s my character’s goal? If you approach it one step at a time, and work at it consistently for years, maybe someday people will admire your work and wish they could do something similar.
It’s wonderful to hear such thoughtful and kind words, especially that the actor from Atlas hopes to set a positive example with his work. It’s also fantastic that he seems committed to playing Shang-Chi for many years to come. Still, I’m curious about what the future holds for the character after the latest Avengers film.
What’s Going On With The Shang-Chi Sequel?
While fans are excited to see Shang-Chi back in Avengers: Doomsday, many are hoping for a second solo movie for the character. Although Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced a sequel, Simu Liu has repeatedly said one is planned. However, it’s been difficult to get it made, largely because the director, Destin Daniel Cretton, is currently working on another Marvel project, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Watch Marvel movies and shows, including Shang-Chi adventures, on Disney+. A subscription costs as little as $11.99 per month with ads. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. See the deal here!
I noticed earlier this year that Simu Liu seemed a little frustrated. He liked a social media post suggesting Marvel hadn’t treated him fairly by not moving forward with a sequel to his first movie. Then, when the sequel to the new Superman film was announced so quickly, he seemed to playfully hint at the long wait for his own potential follow-up. It definitely felt like he was hoping for some news about another chance to play his character!
Simu Liu still seems hopeful about a sequel to Shang-Chi, and so am I. It’s good to know he’s committed to playing the character for the foreseeable future. You can next see his Marvel character in Avengers: Doomsday, which comes out December 18th. In the meantime, you can watch his previous Marvel films and shows on Disney+.
