Be warned, this article contains spoilers for season 9, episode 5 of 9-1-1, titled “Día de los Muertos.” Despite many fans hoping for a romantic relationship, 9-1-1 has clarified that Buck and Eddie won’t be becoming a couple anytime soon. The show continues to deal with the impact of Bobby’s death, as Peter Krause’s character was a central figure for the first eight seasons. Now, as the show moves forward into its ninth season, it needs to evolve, even if it’s a slow process.
The show doesn’t need to ignore Bobby’s storyline, but it should explore other plots that have been put on hold since the tragic events. Before the loss of a main character, a potential romance between Buck and Eddie was a promising storyline. However, season 9, episode 5 of 9-1-1 reveals that this relationship won’t be developing anytime soon.
Buck & Eddie Are On Two Very Different Paths In 9-1-1 Season 9
Fans have been discussing the changes in 9-1-1 season 9, particularly how the four-part premiere split up Buck and Eddie’s partnership. With Chimney now captain of the 118, the team needed to adjust. Eddie’s return to duty means he’s now working alongside Hen as a paramedic, and Ravi is now paired with Eddie. This unfortunately means Buck and Eddie are no longer working together as a team.
It’s understandable that character interactions were limited during a busy time, but things begin to normalize with season 9, episode 5 of 9-1-1, returning to the show’s typical style. This episode also highlights the diverging storylines for Buck and Eddie. Buck grapples with the aftermath of Bobby’s situation, while Eddie faces a crisis of faith and now mourns the loss of his grandmother.
Right now, none of these characters are focused on finding romance. While that could change later, it would be better for the show 9-1-1 to let them resolve their personal problems first. Using a casual relationship just to avoid dealing with those issues wouldn’t be a good approach.
The Risk Of Delaying Buck & Eddie’s Much-Clamored Romance

It would be best for the show 9-1-1 to deliver a fulfilling romance for Buck and Eddie, making the long wait worthwhile. While it’s unclear when that might happen, the show’s writers have clearly hinted at a connection between them, and they’re likely aware of the strong fan support for a relationship.
The biggest concern with delaying a resolution is the uncertainty surrounding the show 9-1-1‘s future after the current TV season. Even though it’s still incredibly popular, cancellation is always a possibility. If the show ends before Buck and Eddie’s relationship is properly addressed, it could negatively impact how the series is remembered, particularly given the controversial decision to kill off Bobby.
