The upcoming TV series based on the Mass Effect video game franchise will take place on a different timeline than the original games and won’t follow the story of Commander Shepard. News of the Amazon adaptation first surfaced in 2021, but production gained momentum in November 2024 with the hiring of Daniel Casey (known for his work on F9: The Fast Saga) as a writer and Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) as showrunner.
During BioWare’s N7 Day 2025 blog post, Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble announced that the upcoming show will feature a completely new story set within the Mass Effect universe, taking place after the events of the original trilogy. Importantly, it won’t simply retell the story of Commander Shepard.
I haven’t really shared much about this yet, but there’s a TV series in the works! I’m so thrilled we’re collaborating with Amazon on it, and honestly, the team over there is doing incredible things. I can’t wait for everyone to see what they’ve created – it’s really exciting to watch it all come together.
The writing team is making great progress, and we have a clear understanding of how the show fits into the established Mass Effect story and connects to the upcoming game. The series will tell a completely new story set within the Mass Effect universe, taking place after the events of the original trilogy. It won’t simply retell Commander Shepard’s adventure – that’s a story we want to leave for you, the player.
