Jacob Elordi aimed to play Frankenstein’s monster as someone strong, unafraid, and who wasn’t silent. His performance as the Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s film is already receiving a lot of praise, and he recently revealed he initially had some doubts about taking on the role, which could be a turning point in his career.
I recently read an interview with Jacob Elordi in Entertainment Weekly, and he shared how excited he was about landing the role of the Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. He said that while he’d have been happy to play any part in the film, the Creature was the only character he truly wanted. He didn’t hesitate for a moment when he found out he was being considered – it was a dream role for him!
Although Jacob Elordi was excited to be in Guillermo del Toro’s new version of Frankenstein, he admitted he was initially worried the Creature would be portrayed as just another non-speaking, growling monster, like in many previous adaptations.
Before receiving the script, I remember thinking – and I probably shouldn’t have doubted Guillermo del Toro, knowing his work – that the Creature might not speak and would be a very abstract, hidden character. While there’s always acting involved in portraying creatures, I wondered if I’d be able to express the Creature’s deep, internal struggles through performance.
The actor’s worries were quickly eased once he started reading Guillermo del Toro’s screenplay. He explained, “When I read the script and del Toro said, ‘Let me tell you my story,’ and I saw how much more there was, I was immediately impressed.” Elordi went on to praise how closely the adaptation stayed true to Mary Shelley’s original novel, saying it truly felt like the Creature from the book.
Jacob Elordi Created a Creature Diary
Jacob Elordi didn’t just learn his lines from Guillermo del Toro’s script. He also created a character diary for the monster he played, using an antique book filled with illustrations by Arthur Rackham to help him get into the role.
He remembered working on a large, almost book-like diary throughout the project. One page held an ink sketch, while the opposite page remained blank. He filled it with everything from the perspective of his character, the Creature, starting after learning about the project and speaking with Guillermo, and finishing it on the last day of filming. He described it as a detailed character bible.
Elordi described the final product as feeling almost dreamlike, adding that unusual things often happened when working with director Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro had actually prepared him for this, warning him that his films have a unique, almost mystical quality. Elordi felt this ‘magic’ throughout the entire filmmaking process.
The film features Oscar Isaac in the lead role, alongside Mia Goth as Lady Elizabeth Harlander, and also stars Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance, and Ralph Ineson.
Frankenstein is currently playing in theaters and will be on Nov. 7.
