Fiona Shaw Reveals Filming Update on Georgia Oakley’s Sense and Sensibility Adaptation

The film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, directed by Georgia Oakley, is now being filmed with a cast already in place.

We shot scenes in gorgeous locations all over Britain, like Dorset, Knebworth, and Devon. The production was incredibly grand – I don’t think I’ll ever forget riding in a four-horse carriage! While it’s true that spending hours in corsets and wigs while filming in these beautiful homes wasn’t always comfortable, I’m confident the final result will be amazing.

Jane Austen first published Sense and Sensibility in 1811, but it was released anonymously, simply stating it was “By a Lady.” A popular film adaptation starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman came out in 1995.

The 1995 film Sense and Sensibility was a huge success, earning over $134 million globally and receiving a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s widely considered a top-notch adaptation of a Jane Austen novel. The movie sparked renewed interest in Austen’s work, and Emma Thompson won an Academy Award for her writing, as well as numerous other awards for her performance.

The upcoming film, an adaptation of a popular story, stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, known for her role in Normal People. The cast also includes George MacKay, Caitríona Balfe from Outlander, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.

The story centers on three sisters—the Dashwoods—who are forced to leave their home after their father dies and settle into a modest cottage. As they adjust to their new, simpler lives, Elinor and Marianne (played by Esmé Creed-Miles) experience both the joys and heartaches of love and loss.

I’m really excited about Imelda Staunton playing Mrs. Jennings in the new Sense & Sensibility adaptation! From what I understand, she’s a wonderfully warm and lively widow who just loves a good bit of gossip. But beyond that, she’s a fantastic friend to the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, always there to offer support, a kind word, and even a little financial help when they need it.

Period dramas have become popular again lately, boosted by the success of Anya Taylor-Joy’s film version of Jane Austen’s Emma. Director Georgia Oakley, previously known for films like Blue Jean and Bored, teamed up with Diana Reid, a well-known Australian author, to bring Austen’s story to the screen.

Although Oakley hasn’t announced a specific date, the movie is likely to come out sometime in 2026 now that filming is complete.
