Death by Lightning tells the fascinating true story of James Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, and his shooter. This compelling historical drama boasts a talented cast and transforms a relatively obscure event into a deeply moving and insightful experience.
James Garfield was known as a down-to-earth, honest man who always stood up for what he believed in, even when it was unpopular. He never sought the presidency, but his integrity resonated with people, and he unexpectedly won the election. Meanwhile, the man who would later shoot him had lived a very different life, and their fateful encounter would change history forever.
Death By Lightning Delivers A Refreshing Historical Drama
“Death by Lightning” tells a captivating and surprising story. The series begins by pointing out that James A. Garfield isn’t as well-remembered as other presidents, making the show’s exploration of his life and death feel particularly important. And it’s not just the story itself that’s compelling—the series is also exceptionally well-made and refined.
The series brilliantly recreates the past through its costumes, sets, and conversations, even with many recognizable actors. While it takes some creative liberties with history for dramatic effect, the core story remains true to the facts, making this adaptation particularly noteworthy.
The series’ stunning visuals and realistic portrayal of the past are a real credit to the entire production team – the writers, set designers, costume creators, and everyone else working behind the scenes. The actors also deserve praise for convincingly becoming their historical characters, bringing the whole story to life.
Death By Lightning’s Cast Is Superb
Michael Shannon delivers a fantastic performance as Garfield, convincingly portraying a man who is both tough and reserved, yet capable of warmth and connection with his family. He expertly navigates a wide range of emotions while maintaining a believable and consistent character. Matthew Macfadyen is equally impressive as the scheming Charles Guiteau, offering a compelling performance alongside Shannon.
Macfadyen consistently delivers strong performances, and this role is no exception. He brilliantly portrays a man who transforms from an enthusiastic admirer into a disturbed individual convinced that killing the president will make him historically significant. It’s a captivating and thought-provoking performance throughout.
The show also features a fantastic supporting cast, including Nick Offerman, Betty Gilpin, Bradley Whitford, and Shea Whigham. “Death by Lightning” is a truly excellent historical drama and well worth watching, especially if you enjoy the actors involved or have any interest in history.
All four episodes of Death by Lightning are now available to watch on Netflix.
