Be warned: this article contains spoilers for the Shifting Gears episode “Loyalty.” Watch the episode on Hulu if you don’t want to have it ruined!
After six episodes, Season 2 of Shifting Gears is proving to be a success. The show, starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, has featured some fun celebrity appearances and nods to beloved ’90s sitcoms. While it’s off to a good start, there’s still potential for the ABC comedy to get even better.
I really enjoy Shifting Gears, but I’m disappointed with how little we’ve seen of Barrett Margolis as Georgia this season. As a longtime viewer, I was hoping for more of her character, and so far, her role in Season 2 feels underwhelming.
Barrett Margolis’ Georgia Needs More Screentime
I was really excited when Shifting Gears featured Georgia in an early episode with guest star Lilly Singh, but that was a brief highlight. The season has mostly followed Matt’s relationship with Eve and Riley’s new coffee shop. The rest of the time has been spent on Carter’s work life, or the ongoing stories of Gabe and Stitch at the shop.
I really do love the show, but honestly, it feels like we’re missing out on so much potential with Georgia. She’s incredibly sharp and funny, but too often we only hear about her adventures secondhand, and she’s limited to just a few witty lines. Barrett Margolis is fantastic in the role, and she absolutely shines whenever she does get a chance, so I really hope the writers give Georgia more substantial storylines. She deserves to be a bigger part of the action!
Does Shifting Gears Have Too Many Stories Going On?
It seems like Shifting Gears tries to do too much in each episode, considering it’s only a 30-minute sitcom. While the show focuses on Matt and Riley, their storylines don’t always connect, and there’s usually another separate plot happening at the same time.

Shifting Gears Finally Dropped A Reference To One Of Kat Dennings’ Old Shows, And I Love To See It
It’s surprising some cast members even have lines some weeks. While I enjoyed seeing Riley expand her business beyond the garage on Shifting Gears, the show appears to make sure Riley and Matt both get roughly the same amount of screen time.
I don’t know if Shifting Gears will ultimately work out, but it definitely has a strong cast. However, having two leads – Tim Allen and Kat Dennings – who could easily carry a show themselves is proving tricky. The series struggles to give both actors enough screen time. Hopefully, they can find the right balance soon and develop characters like Georgia more fully.
