As a big sci-fi fan, I was initially getting a classic Star Wars droid vibe from Two-Boots in Shadow Lord – think C-3PO or K-2SO, all witty banter and helpfulness. But honestly, his choice to bring in the Empire totally changed things, giving him a much darker side. It reminded me of Brander Lawson’s warnings; he was right to fear the Empire coming to Janix, knowing they’d never leave and would just use any trouble as an excuse to take control. And it’s exactly the same setup we saw with Ferrix in the first season of Andor – that creeping Imperial presence, promising order but really just wanting power. It’s a familiar, and frankly unsettling, story beat.
Bob Odenkirk is perfectly fine in these kinds of roles—at least, I think so, and you might agree—so he’s not the problem with Ben Wheatley’s new thriller. The real issue is the film simply doesn’t have much of a story. Normal is an enjoyable but ultimately lightweight movie that struggles to justify its 91-minute length.
