The fourth Star Trek movie seems to be cancelled, but there’s hope that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds or the planned Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series could find a way to bring back Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise. Pine, along with Zachary Quinto as Spock and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, starred in three Star Trek films produced by J.J. Abrams between 2009 and 2016.
A recent article in Variety about Paramount Skydance and its new CEO, David Ellison, revealed that the studio is planning a new Star Trek movie with a completely new cast. They are no longer considering bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, or any of the actors from the J.J. Abrams films.
As a huge Star Trek fan, I’ve been following the saga of Star Trek 4 for years! It’s been incredibly frustrating watching it get stuck in development for almost a decade. So many talented directors – like S.J. Clarkson, Matt Shakman, and even Quentin Tarantino – came on board, but ultimately left because they just couldn’t agree on the right creative direction for the film. It’s been a real rollercoaster!
Despite the entire main cast – including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Sofia Boutella, and Zoe Saldana – expressing interest in a fourth Star Trek film, it seems unlikely to happen due to changes in leadership at Paramount Skydance.
Now that Paramount Skydance seems to be abandoning plans to bring back J.J. Abrams’ movie cast, how likely is it that those characters will show up in the current Star Trek TV shows?
Star Trek TV Saving Chris Pine’s Star Trek Movie Cast Is An Unlikely Longshot
It’s highly unlikely that Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk and the crew of the Kelvin Timeline’s USS Enterprise will ever appear in the original Star Trek timeline, given the direction of the current Star Trek shows on Paramount+.
Paramount+ has two more Star Trek shows planned: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Both shows will have two seasons available on the streaming service. Currently, production is underway for the fifth and final, shortened season of Strange New Worlds, as well as season two of Starfleet Academy.
With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds nearing the end of its planned run, it’s unlikely we’ll see Paul Wesley’s Captain Kirk and Ethan Peck’s Spock interact with the versions of the characters played by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. While a meeting between the two sets of actors would be a huge draw for Star Trek fans, it probably won’t happen.
The series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy takes place in the 32nd century and could offer a practical way to bring back Chris Pine or other actors from the original Star Trek films, perhaps as guest stars. Star Trek: Discovery previously revealed that time travel conflicts made the Federation aware of the existence of an alternate timeline, known as the Kelvin Timeline.
As a huge Star Trek fan, I’m really hoping Star Trek: Starfleet Academy might acknowledge the existence of that other Kirk and his Enterprise from the alternate timeline. Even better, imagine if they actually showed him! That would be a massive moment for all of us who love the franchise.
There’s no sign this will actually occur, and even if it did, any connection to the Kelvin Timeline in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy would probably just be a quick mention, not major appearances by the actors from the Star Trek films.
Star Trek’s Animated Shows Wanted To Bring In Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk
Both Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy explored the possibility of Chris Pine voicing Captain Kirk, but it didn’t work out. When Star Trek: Lower Decks introduced the multiverse in its fifth season, the show briefly considered having Pine make a cameo appearance as his version of Kirk.
Like season 1, Star Trek: Prodigy’s second season had a grand, universe-spanning story. The producers even considered having Chris Pine voice Captain Kirk, but quickly realized it wasn’t possible.
In late 2005, Viacom and CBS Corporation separated, and with that split came a division of the Star Trek franchise. Paramount Pictures gained the rights to produce Star Trek movies, while CBS continued to own the rights to Star Trek television shows.
J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot introduced the Kelvin Timeline as a way to avoid rights issues. The film studio didn’t own the rights to use characters established in the original Star Trek television series.
Paramount Skydance’s new leadership is planning to consolidate all of the Star Trek series and films under a single production banner, something that hasn’t happened since Rick Berman managed the entire Star Trek franchise.
Now that the lines between Star Trek movies and TV shows are blurring, there’s a possibility Chris Pine and the actors from the Kelvin timeline films could appear on future Star Trek TV series. However, it doesn’t seem like this is currently being planned.
Star Trek TV Might Change Along With Star Trek Movies
Paramount Skydance is focusing on making another Star Trek movie, but the future of the Star Trek TV shows is uncertain. Since 2017, when Star Trek: Discovery first aired, Alex Kurtzman and his production company, Secret Hideout, have been in charge of the Star Trek series on Paramount+.
Alex Kurtzman’s contract with Paramount ends in 2026, and the upcoming seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (season 5) and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (season 2) might be the last Star Trek shows produced by his Secret Hideout studio for Paramount+. Secret Hideout was also responsible for creating other popular Star Trek series like Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy.
Paramount Skydance is considering how to manage the future of Star Trek. They could renew their partnership with Alex Kurtzman and his production company, Secret Hideout, or they could bring in a new leader to oversee both the TV shows and movies. Many fans are hoping that experienced creators like Ronald D. Moore and Terry Matalas will be considered for this key role.
It’s unclear if Chris Pine and the cast of the recent Star Trek movies will be involved in future installments, but they’ve become very popular with fans and their portrayal of Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew is memorable.
By 2026, the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, we should have a much clearer idea of what’s next for Star Trek movies and TV shows. This will likely be after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and potentially Star Trek: Starfleet Academy conclude in 2027.
