The latest episode of NCIS Season 23 recently aired. This week, the team investigated a U.S. marine suspected of kidnapping the wife of a Justice Department official. It turned out the marine was actually helping the woman escape an abusive relationship, having hidden her with a support group for women in similar situations.

What I really enjoyed about “Gone Girls” was its inclusion of references to musicals like Hamilton, and even a nod to Thom E. Gemcity – the author persona of Timothy McGee. But even more interesting was the hint about the future of Kasie Hines’ career at NCIS.

How NCIS Shouted Out Musicals And Thom E. Gemcity

A minor plotline in “Gone Girls” involved Barbara Dunsley, the NCIS accountant first introduced in Season 21, inviting the team to a community theatre gala. She was set to perform in an evening of Gilbert & Sullivan songs, which the team wasn’t thrilled about. Though they couldn’t attend the actual performance due to a case, they realized Barbara would be disappointed, so they arranged a special performance of her song, “Major-General’s Song” from The Pirates of Penzance, for her in the NCIS evidence garage, with help from her fellow cast members.

Amidst the show’s musical moments, we discovered Alden Parker performed in a high school production of The Pirates of Penzance, while Jessica Knight definitely doesn’t enjoy that type of musical. What really stood out, though, was Nick Torres’s obsession with Hamilton – it’s the only musical he likes! He even managed to sneak in two references to it during a team meeting, but no one seemed to notice or care. Now I’m definitely feeling the urge to rewatch Lin-Manuel Miranda’s masterpiece on Disney+!

During the investigation, McGee and Torres encountered a women’s group that introduced themselves as a book club called Prose Before Bros. They learned the group member, Molly Delgado, had joined it. Things got interesting when one of the women recognized McGee as the author of the L.J. Tibbs novels, writing under the pen name Thom E. Gemcity. The moment was a bit awkward, though, when she admitted she hadn’t actually read any of his books, even though she enjoyed spy thrillers.

Will Kasie Hines Start Doing Field Work?

While the references in ‘Gone Girls’ were amusing, the most interesting part for me was Kasie Hines expressing interest in fieldwork. She jokingly mentioned wanting to get out of the lab when Knight visited, even referring to herself by name. Knight seemed receptive to the idea, saying she’d be happy to have Kasie join her in the field.

Fans have been hoping to see Kasie involved in more on-location investigations since February 2024, and it seems like NCIS might finally be starting to make that happen. While her job as a forensic specialist will always require a lot of lab work, it would be great to see her get a chance to participate in field work occasionally. Perhaps she’ll discuss this possibility with Director Vance later this season.

With “Gone Girls” now shown on CBS and available to stream on Paramount+, the next episode of NCIS is particularly important. It’s the conclusion of a special crossover event with NCIS: Origins that spans decades. If you want to watch “Now and Then” as it airs, be sure to watch CBS next Tuesday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time, as it’s a change from the usual 8 p.m. timeslot for Origins.
