2025 brought some surprisingly innovative TV shows, and the creativity keeps coming! Like all entertainment, television goes through phases. We’re seeing a surge in popular genres like fantasy, drama, action, and comedy, with many similar shows launching on streaming services around the same time.
Over the past few years, streaming TV has seen a lot of different genres become popular. In 2020, true crime and documentaries were huge. Reality TV gained traction in 2021, followed by historical and fantasy shows in 2022. Comedy series were the focus in 2023, and medical dramas started to trend in 2024. Currently, in 2025, viewers are especially drawn to mind-bending psychological thrillers and science fiction series.
2025 Was Full Of Weird Psychological Thrillers & Sci-Fi Series
As a critic, I can confidently say this has been a phenomenal year for television streaming. What’s really stood out isn’t just the quality, but how wonderfully strange so many of the biggest shows have been. We’ve seen a surge in psychological thrillers and sci-fi series that genuinely push boundaries – they’re unsettling, confusing, and brilliantly creative. Honestly, it feels like 2025 is shaping up to be the year of truly weird television, and I’m here for it!
The year started strong with science fiction on Apple TV+. The second season of the dystopian series Silo premiered in November 2024 and wrapped up in January 2025. Immediately following its finale, Apple TV+ released the second season of Severance, another sci-fi show known for being incredibly strange. Severance stands out with its mind-bending psychological themes and a quirky, unusual sense of humor.
As a sci-fi fan, I was really excited about what Apple TV dropped in May 2025: Murderbot. It’s a hilarious show about a security robot who gets free will and basically just wants to binge-watch TV all day – totally relatable! Then, in July, MGM+ gave us a take on Stephen King’s The Institute, and Hulu followed that up in August with Alien: Earth. It was a pretty solid summer for streaming if you’re into that kind of stuff.
In September, Netflix released one of the most unusual shows of 2025: Wayward. This psychological thriller, while strange, delves into important themes like the problems with superficial activism and the potential for abuse in schools and other teen facilities. It’s a great illustration of the thought-provoking ideas this type of genre can tackle. Given the success of many similar, unconventional thrillers and sci-fi shows, it’s not surprising that more are being developed.
Netflix & Apple TV Have More Weird TV Shows On The Way
In 2025, Netflix and Apple TV dominated with unique sci-fi and suspenseful thrillers, and they’re continuing that trend. This holiday season, Netflix will release the final season of Stranger Things, promising an even more mind-bending story. Looking ahead to 2026, audiences can expect the return of 3 Body Problem, a complex sci-fi series from the creators of Game of Thrones.
Apple TV is gearing up for a potentially groundbreaking sci-fi series called Pluribus, launching November 7, 2025. Early indications suggest it will be similar to Severance, offering thought-provoking social commentary with a darkly humorous twist. Fans can also look forward to the return of Dark Matter on Apple TV in 2026. It seems 2025 is shaping up to be the year of uniquely strange television, and that trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down.
