Lionsgate Accused of Burying Political Thriller ‘Anniversary’

Paramount has been criticized for seemingly downplaying the release of its 2025 political thriller, Anniversary, despite featuring a well-known cast and an intriguing story.

According to a Gersh partner who represents director Jan Komasa and assisted in the film’s production, the movie wasn’t widely released because of its controversial nature. They believe this lack of distribution reflects current societal trends.

Nick Wechsler, the producer of Anniversary, explained that it’s been difficult to get the film noticed. He noted that marketing a politically-charged movie is challenging in today’s climate, as audiences can be hesitant and unsure how to react emotionally. He described the current environment as ‘a weird time’ for such films.

The film Anniversary features Diane Lane, Dylan O’Brien, Kyle Chandler, and Phoebe Dynevor. While Lionsgate funded and released the thriller, it received very little promotion and appears to have been downplayed by the studio, possibly due to the current political environment. Released in 800 theaters, it earned just $259,180 at the box office – an average of only $352 per theater.
