Kevin Feige is facing a compelling question: can we really feel like things are fresh and new when everything starts to feel repetitive? While the answer seems clear, a recent casting rumor for Spider-Man: Brand New Day suggests a return to a controversial choice made in Tom Holland’s previous Marvel movie, offering more of what audiences have already seen.
According to Daniel Richtman, as reported by ComicBook.com, Tony Revolori is likely to return as Flash Thompson in the next movie. This is happening even though Flash, a character known for being annoying, spoiled, and constantly seeking attention, isn’t particularly popular with fans.
Fans are pretty divided about Thompson. Most don’t want to see him return, largely because the way he’s portrayed is so different from the original comics. While the comic book version is meant to be a bully, he’s also physically strong and athletic, which fits the classic trope of a big, tough bully picking on a smaller, nerdy kid. The current portrayal just doesn’t capture that dynamic.
However, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Revolori’s version of the character is roughly the same size as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and Holland is much more physically imposing. This makes it hard to believe this complaining version could ever intimidate Parker. He simply can’t, so he tries to steal attention from Spider-Man while secretly resenting Peter Parker himself.
The return of Revolori seems to contradict director Destin Daniel Cretton’s recent comments at Comic-Con. He described the team as being fully immersed in the fun details – perfecting the suit, figuring out the best way to swing through the city, and crafting a unique emotional story and thrilling experience unlike anything audiences have seen before.
Turn the Flash Off
The public isn’t particularly interested in seeing Flash Thompson again, and it appears Marvel Studios recognizes this. That’s why his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home was brief, a contrast to his more prominent, and perhaps unwelcome, role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Instead, new characters like the Punisher (Jon Bernthal), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and potentially Daredevil, are generating excitement for the film.
This movie should help refresh things for Tom Holland’s next three Marvel films. It’s great to see Ned and MJ back – they’re essential to the franchise, unlike Flash Thompson. If the rumors are true, the film won’t be bad, but it won’t feel as fresh and new as it could be; it’ll feel more like a continuation of what we already know.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for worldwide release in theaters on July 31, 2026.
