Recent reports indicate that one upcoming DC Universe project is being delayed, but this could be a good thing overall. Because the DCU is just getting started, there’s a lot of focus on each new release, as these early films and shows are crucial in establishing the franchise.
The DC Universe has already gotten off to a good start with its first show, Creature Commandos, and first movie, Superman. However, there’s still a lot more to come. While one upcoming project is now expected to be released at a later date, this delay could actually benefit the franchise in the long run.
The DC Universe’s Next Show Being Delayed Could Benefit 2 DCU Releases
Reports surfaced in late October 2025 indicating that the DCU show Lanterns would likely be delayed. Originally, it was expected to debut before Supergirl in 2026. However, The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed, following a question from The Green Lanterns Podcast, that Lanterns will now premiere after the 2026 DCU movie.
Although some fans eager to see a Green Lantern-focused DC Universe might be disappointed, this change could actually be helpful for the franchise in two ways if it happens.
Primarily, this approach lets Supergirl introduce the Green Lanterns in a natural way. It makes sense that audiences will better understand the Green Lanterns’ galactic scope after seeing more of the galaxy, and Supergirl’s comics already take place on many different planets.
On the other hand, the Supergirl movie could gain an advantage from being the first project to truly showcase the expansive DC Universe. This might not have been the case if Lanterns had come out first, as that show would likely need to spend a lot of time explaining the Green Lanterns and how they function.
Why Supergirl Being The Next DC Universe Release Would Make Sense
Following the releases of Superman and Peacemaker season 2, launching Supergirl next would make sense for the DC Universe. Releasing Supergirl soon after Superman could capitalize on that film’s popularity, and if Supergirl does well, it could create even more excitement for Man of Tomorrow.
This approach helps the DC Universe strike a balance between its realistic and intense stories and its more traditional superhero adventures. While the Woman of Tomorrow comic is a darker take on Supergirl, the upcoming adaptation will likely be suitable for families. This contrasts sharply with the experience of actor Nathan Fillion, who joked that he swore more on his first day filming Lanterns than he had in his entire career, due to the script’s frequent use of strong language.
