Simu Liu Was Bitten By A Dog The Night Before His Infamous Stock Photo Model Shoot

Simu Liu, known for playing Shang-Chi in the Marvel movies and Disney+ shows like What If…? and Marvel Zombies, shared that he was injured by a dog the night before his famous stock photo shoot. He’s also set to return as Shang-Chi in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.

Before becoming known as Shang-Chi in Marvel movies, Simu Liu actually worked as a stock photo model. When the Shang-Chi film came out in 2021, those old photos started circulating online, and Liu himself even posted some of them on his social media.

While promoting his new Netflix film, In Your Dreams, Liu spoke with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant. Crossan asked him what kind of stock photo he’d make for the movie, and Liu playfully acted out a pose: smiling, waving, and dancing.

Liu explained that he was bitten in the face by a dog the night before the photoshoot. He and his girlfriend were visiting a friend who was watching a dog, and Liu got caught between the dog and another animal, resulting in a puncture wound and significant blood loss.

Despite this, he went ahead with the photoshoot. Liu noticed that in all the stock photos—taken on the same day—one side of his face has a scar. He playfully refers to this as adding “lore” to his images. You can see his comments below:

Ever wonder about the story behind those stock photos? Well, the night before the shoot, I got bitten in the face by a dog! My girlfriend and I were visiting a friend who was watching two dogs that apparently didn’t get along. I think I was petting both of them at the same time, but on opposite sides, and one got jealous and lunged at the other, accidentally hitting my face instead. It wasn’t a severe injury, but I did get a few puncture wounds and a lot of bleeding. I was really worried about it showing up in the photos, and if you look closely at them – since they were all taken on the same day – you can actually see the scarring on the side of my face. So, there’s a bit of a story behind those pictures!

Liu’s fans enjoy finding and sharing stock photos of him online, and his recent comments give those images a new and interesting meaning, especially the ones showing him dancing and smiling.

Since a memorable stock photo shoot and a dog bite, Simu Liu has become a well-known actor with roles in several popular projects. While he’s best known as Shang-Chi, he’s also appeared as Ken in the Barbie movie, Jung Kim in the sitcom Kim’s Convenience, and will voice the character Multi-Paul in the third season of the Prime Video animated series Invincible.

A sequel to Shang-Chi is planned, though it’s still being developed. Filming for Avengers: Doomsday is complete, and the movie is set to come out on December 18, 2026. This will be Simu Liu’s first time reprising his role as Shang-Chi in a live-action film since 2021.

Before starring in Doomsday, Simu Liu lends his voice to a new animated comedy on Netflix called In Your Dreams. The movie follows two kids who enter the dream world to try and help their parents, Dad (voiced by Liu) and Mom (Cristin Milioti), save their marriage.

In Your Dreams will be available to stream on Netflix on November 14.
