Ryan Reynolds Is Working On A Movie With Gilmore Girls’ Creator (And How Snarky-Fast Is His Character Going To Talk?)

Ryan Reynolds didn’t participate in any films planned for 2025, except for producing the documentary John Candy: I Like Me. However, he’ll return to acting next year in the comedy Animal Friends, which is a live-action animated road trip movie. There’s also talk that he’ll be back as Deadpool in the next Marvel Avengers film, currently titled Doomsday. Looking ahead, Reynolds is also collaborating with Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of Gilmore Girls, which makes me wonder if his character will be known for the same quick, witty dialogue the actor is famous for.

Ryan Reynolds and Amy Sherman-Palladino are creating a live-action Eloise movie for Netflix, inspired by the classic book series from the 1950s by Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight. Reynolds will produce the film through his production company, Maximum Effort, alongside MRC, and will also star as a new villain. Mae Schenk will play Eloise. The movie won’t be a direct adaptation of any specific book, but rather a completely original story, with Sherman-Palladino writing the screenplay alongside Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton. Filming is scheduled to begin later this month.

I absolutely adore the story of Eloise! It’s about this incredibly imaginative little girl who lives in a fantastic room way up high at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. She has a nanny, a sweet pug named Weenies, and a turtle called Skipperdee. Apparently, the author, Kay Thompson, based Eloise on a friend she made up when she was a child – though some people think Liza Minnelli might have been an inspiration too! You might remember the TV movies from 2003, Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, where Sofia Vassilieva played Eloise and the wonderful Julie Andrews was her nanny. They were so charming!

It’s hard to say exactly how Ryan Reynolds’ character will impact Mae Schenk’s Eloise, but he’ll likely deliver plenty of witty lines and jokes while doing so. He seems to be taking a similar approach to his role in the 2024 film IF, which was one of his more family-friendly movies recently. This will be Reynolds’ first movie made exclusively for Netflix since The Adam Project in 2022. Fans of Amy Sherman-Palladino can also find her Gilmore Girls revival, A Year in the Life, streaming only on Netflix.

The new film Eloise, a collaboration between Reynolds and Sherman-Palladino, is their most ambitious project yet aimed at bringing the story to viewers worldwide.
