Okay, so HBO has dropped a new series, and honestly, I’m really excited about it. It’s got a lot of actors we already love, and it feels like the perfect successor to shows like Sex and the City and Girls. The initial reaction has been incredibly positive – people are really into it, and I can see why. It’s filling a niche that was definitely missing, and it’s doing it with style and a lot of buzz.
Rachel Sennott created, wrote, and stars in the new comedy series, I Love LA, which premiered on November 2nd with the episode “Block Her.” The show centers on a group of friends who rely heavily on each other as they reconnect and try to figure out their careers. Critics have responded very positively to I Love LA, giving it an 81% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show has received a very positive score based on 26 reviews, with only six being negative. Because it’s brand new – only one episode has aired so far – there isn’t a viewer rating yet, and initial reactions from critics are somewhat varied.
In a review for The Daily Beast, Nick Schager points out that the show focuses so much on the characters Tallulah and Maia having fun that it doesn’t fully develop Tallulah as a character. He also notes the series accurately reflects Gen-Z perspectives and satirizes the often-absurd world of West Coast entertainment. While admitting there are some genuinely funny moments, Schager believes the show will primarily appeal to younger viewers who are accustomed to influencer culture and its superficial content.
According to TVLine’s Dave Nemetz, the series feels like a blend of the shows Girls and Insecure, but ultimately falls a bit flat. He notes it’s neither a strong comedy nor a compelling drama, lacking the depth to truly connect with viewers and the humor to distract from its superficiality.
The HBO comedy I Love L.A. has also received positive attention. Alison Herman points out that the show isn’t really about Los Angeles as a whole – the complex, sprawling city with many facets. Instead, it’s about the idea of “L.A.” – a simplified, often distorted image that attracts both critics and those chasing their dreams. The show focuses entirely on this limited world of aspiring influencers fueled by artificial hype, offering a surprisingly insightful look at that culture, more so than a typical sitcom focused on jokes or characters.
In a review, Angie Han criticized the show’s reliance on clichés about Los Angeles residents. She noted that I Love LA feels inconsistent, shifting between sarcasm and sincerity, which makes it hard to connect with the characters or even understand if the show wants us to root for them. However, Han felt the show improved significantly in its second half, particularly showcasing the talent of performer Sennott. She argued that once the show focused on this strength, it finally became genuine and relatable.
Abe Friedtanzer from Awards Buzz gave the new show a positive review, noting that creator Sena Sennott has made something her existing fans will enjoy, but also broadened its appeal. He believes the show successfully satirizes the common misconceptions and stereotypes associated with her generation.
What Is I Love LA About?
The show centers around a group of driven friends trying to make it in Los Angeles, both professionally and romantically. It specifically follows Maia, a newcomer from New York who wants to be a talent manager. She’s told her friend Tallula she got a promotion – a fib – and now they’re working together to try and launch Tallula’s career as a popular social media influencer.
In addition to Rachel Sennott, who writes and stars in I Love LA, the show features Josh Hutcherson, Odessa A’zion, and True Whitaker. Moses Ingram, Lauren Holt, Elijah Wood, Quenlin Blackwell, Josh Brener, Tim Baltz, Froy Gutierrez, and Colin Woodell make guest appearances.
“I Love LA” could be a truly standout film, and early reviews seem to confirm that potential. The movie has a compelling idea at its core – a look at how people desperately chase success, often pretending to be something they’re not along the way.
New episodes of I Love LA come out every Sunday on HBO Max.
