The Godfather Franchise Is a Streaming Hit Again

A classic gangster story is currently very popular online. All three movies in the series are topping the charts on a streaming service that doesn’t get enough credit.

According to Flix Patrol, The Godfather is still the most popular movie or TV show on Pluto TV, holding the top spot for an incredible 145 days in a row. Plus, The Godfather: Part II has climbed to number two, and The Godfather: Part III continues to stay strong at number three.

On November 2nd, The Godfather: Part II (1974) climbed three spots in the rankings and remained there on November 3rd. Also on November 3rd, The Godfather: Part III (1990), often considered a hidden gem, entered the charts for the first time. Both films became available on Tubi, a streaming service, on November 1st.

Francis Ford Coppola directed this film, co-writing the script with Mario Puzo, who originally wrote the 1969 novel it’s based on. Marlon Brando starred as Vito Corleone, the head of a powerful crime family. The movie also featured Al Pacino as Michael, Vito’s youngest son, along with James Caan, Richard Castellano, Abe Vigoda, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton playing key supporting roles.

I still remember when The Godfather came out in 1972 – it was a huge hit! Made over $250 million with a tiny budget of under $7 million, which was incredible. Critics loved it too, and it racked up a ton of awards, including Oscars for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Marlon Brando won Best Actor for playing Vito Corleone – though he famously refused to accept the award. Of course, there were sequels later on, and The Godfather: Part III came out in the 90s, but it just didn’t have the same impact as the original.

The Godfather Trilogy’s Legacy – Explained

When The Godfather: Part II was released in 1974, critics were somewhat divided in their opinions, though most reviews were positive. Over time, however, the film has received much more praise. Financially, the sequel didn’t perform as well as the first film, earning $93 million at the box office on a $13 million budget.

As a huge fan of The Godfather films, I remember being pretty disappointed when The Godfather Part III came out in 1990. A lot of people felt it didn’t quite live up to the first two, and the story felt overly complicated. Still, despite the criticism, it actually did really well at the box office, earning almost $137 million on a $54 million budget! And honestly, over the years, it’s gotten a bit of a second look. The release of the ‘previously unreleased’ cut in 2020 definitely helped, giving the film a chance to be appreciated in a new light.

I’m so excited! You can now stream all three Godfather movies – The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, and The Godfather: Part III – on Pluto right now. It’s a great way to revisit these classics!
