Despite receiving five Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture, it barely broke even, earning around $3 million on a $3 million budget. The original distributing company, Liberty Pictures, was bought by Paramount Pictures and closed down five years later. Paramount then sold the film’s rights to an independent distributor, who later gave the syndication rights to National Telefilm Associates (NTA), the company that also owned the source material, a story called The Greatest Gift.
