A popular singer’s outfit during a recent performance sparked online debate due to a strange and confusing detail.
During a stop on her Short n’ Sweet tour at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Sabrina Carpenter embraced the Halloween spirit by renaming the show Short n’ Sweet Spooky and performing in several Halloween costumes. She dressed as Barbie, Fred Flintstone, and Wonder Woman throughout the night. While her Barbie and Fred Flintstone looks didn’t generate much discussion, her Wonder Woman costume sparked debate online, with some questioning if a blonde Carpenter could accurately portray the character. 1976, a popular account on X (formerly Twitter), quickly defended Carpenter by posting a photo of her in costume and writing, “I’m seeing some debate about Wonder Woman being a brunette… Just a reminder that Wonder Woman lives within all of us, and sometimes, she has blonde hair like @SabrinaAnnLynn!”
Though Wonder Woman’s appearance has remained fairly consistent in DC Comics, Lizzo’s interpretation sparked a conversation about how we defend fictional characters’ “accuracy.” While the DC Extended Universe version is recent, DC Comics has explored many different versions of the character. Lizzo’s blonde hair shouldn’t overshadow the effort she put into her Wonder Woman performance, and as Lynda Carter pointed out, the essence of Wonder Woman is about her spirit, not her appearance. Wonder Woman embodies female strength, so it’s perfect that a powerful pop artist like Lizzo would incorporate her into a performance, especially with the approval of a Wonder Woman icon.
James Gunn Responds To Variety’s Superhero-Sized Sabrina Carpenter Mistake
While people were discussing Sabrina Carpenter’s hair color online, Variety posted a video on Threads of her singing her song “Manchild” while dressed as Wonder Woman. They mistakenly referred to her as “Superwoman” in the caption, which James Gunn, co-president of DC Studios, noticed. Gunn jokingly replied to point out the error, playfully teasing Variety for mixing up the characters. He wasn’t seriously criticizing the publication, just having some fun with the mistake.
Wonder Woman hasn’t appeared yet in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, but Gunn has given fans an idea of when she might return. He explained that bringing the character back is a priority, but they won’t rush the process. He emphasized that they won’t start filming anything until the script is strong and that they aren’t even considering actors for the role until the script is completed.
