The film’s recent return to theaters hasn’t been successful, contributing to Hollywood’s weakest October box office in almost 30 years.
Netflix’s film KPop Demon Hunters recently returned to 2,890 theaters, but its performance has been disappointing. It earned just $600,000 by October 31st, and is expected to make around $3.4 million during its second weekend in theaters. This is significantly less than the studio hoped for, leading one distribution insider to tell Deadline that the film has likely reached its earning potential.
KPop Demon Hunters Part of Lowest-Grossing Box Office Month in 27 Years
This Halloween marked the end of the worst October for Hollywood box office revenue in nearly three decades. While Halloween landed on a Friday this year, the Major League Baseball World Series – specifically a game between the LA Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays on Halloween night – likely kept many people at home. Total box office earnings for October were around $440 million, the lowest since 1998 when earnings reached $455.5 million. For comparison, October 2018 was a record-breaker, with popular releases like Venom, Halloween, and A Star Is Born bringing in a total of $832.8 million.
The Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and written with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, quickly became a cultural hit after its release in June. The movie centers on Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—the three members of the KPop group Huntr/x—who balance fighting demons with performing for their fans. Their popularity, and the world itself, is threatened when a new demonic boy band called the Saja Boys appears.
What the Future Looks Like for Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters
Although Netflix is considering various possibilities for expanding the series with spinoffs or sequels, the creators have expressed reservations about adapting it into live-action. In a late September interview, one of the creators, Appelhans, explained that the show relies on a highly stylized approach. They intentionally exaggerate elements – shapes, ideas, and even jokes – to create a unique tone. Adapting that style to live-action would be a significant challenge, and they aren’t sure it would work.
Kang admitted the project was incredibly challenging, stating, ‘I believe something more difficult would be impossible. This was already extremely hard.’
KPop Demon Hunters is in theaters and available for streaming on Netflix now.
