11 Years Later, Woody Harrelson Officially Confirms Return Status to Hit HBO Crime Drama

I’m a big fan of True Detective, and like a lot of people, I was hoping to see Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey team up for another season. But, sadly, it doesn’t seem likely. Woody Harrelson has hinted that he doesn’t think it’ll happen, which is really disappointing to hear.

I was so excited to hear Woody Harrelson talking about potentially doing another season of True Detective with Matthew McConaughey! Apparently, McConaughey himself said he’s definitely open to it, but only if the script is as amazing as the first one they got back in 2014. Fingers crossed they can make it happen – that first season was incredible, and seeing those two back together would be fantastic!

“Matthew’s so funny, but in fairness, never,” Harrelson said. He then added, “Not a chance.”

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Kick Off HBO’s True Detective Era

True Detective, created by Nic Pizzolatto, is a crime series on HBO where the story and actors change each season. The first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, playing detectives named Rust Cohle and Marty Hart.

The HBO series True Detective consistently attracts major stars. Each season features a new pairing of well-known actors leading the cast. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson starred in the first season, followed by Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn in Season 2. Season 3 showcased Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, and Stephen Dorff, while Jodie Foster and Kali Reis headlined Season 4, also known as Night Country.

Woody Harrelson hinted he won’t reprise his role as Marty Hart because he’s being considered for a different leading part, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

“He’s a great actor, and I’d like to see him in that world,” McConaughey said regarding Cage.

McConaughey felt the first season of the show was a huge success. He’d be open to returning if the script had the same energy and creativity. He especially appreciated the character Rust Cohle’s long speeches – Cohle was free to express his innermost thoughts without worrying about the audience’s reaction, and McConaughey found that liberating.

As a big fan of True Detective, I was really interested to see Issa López take the reins as showrunner starting with Season 3. One thing I’ve always enjoyed about the show is that it’s never stayed in one place for long – it’s always a new story with a different cast of characters. And it sounds like Season 5 is going to be particularly interesting, taking us to Jamaica Bay in New York!

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama, said that Season 5, like Issa’s previous work on Night Country, is full of compelling ideas. She described the new season as taking place in a different setting but maintaining the same impactful storytelling.

Woody Harrelson is starring in the new movie Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the latest installment in the popular magic and mystery series. The film also features Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fisher, Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Ruffalo, Rosamund Pike, Justice Smith, and Ariana Greenblatt.

True Detective is now streaming on HBO Max.
