Stranger Things Finale Planned Nearly a Decade Ago: Duffer Brothers Reveal Insights

The creators of Stranger Things have shared how they envisioned the series’ ending – a moment they first planned almost ten years ago.

During an appearance at the Lucca Comics and Games Festival in Italy, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer discussed the show’s upcoming final season. Ross revealed they’ve known the ending for a long time, explaining, “We actually knew what the final scene would be about six or seven years ago. We always had a clear idea of the last 40 minutes.”

Matt continued by adding:

We had to accept that things were ending and say goodbye, and we didn’t focus on that much while writing the last episode. But when we read it with the actors, it became clear that it mirrored our own feelings. We hope that emotion – both what we felt while writing and what the actors felt performing – will resonate with the audience.

Originally released in 2016, Stranger Things quickly became popular thanks to its nostalgic feel for the 1980s. The show features memorable music and imagery from the decade, and includes well-known actors like Winona Ryder. The story centers around a mysterious girl who appears in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, leading a group of friends to uncover secret government experiments and a dangerous threat to their families.

During a recent discussion, several actors shared their experiences on the show and talked about how their characters changed over the seasons. Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, mentioned how young he was – only 13 – when he first started working on the project.

He explained that the show reflects aspects of their own lives, though their experiences weren’t as dramatic as fighting monsters. They shared a unique childhood growing up together. Wolfhard also mentioned that his character will take on a stronger leadership role in the final season.

Netflix revealed the official poster for season 5, showing the main cast with Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower) looming over them.

The trailer released a few days ago has sparked a lot of discussion, with many believing it shows moments from every episode of season 5. It appears Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) is once again a target for Vecna, who ominously declares this will be “one last time.”

Many of the central characters appear troubled, especially Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), who is predicted to have a climactic battle with her main enemy, Vecna. The show currently holds a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The last season of Stranger Things will be released in stages. The first four episodes will be available on November 26th, followed by three more on December 25th. The final two-hour episode will premiere on New Year’s Eve, and some fans will even have the chance to see it in theaters. Plus, Netflix is hosting a special online event on November 7th where viewers can get a sneak peek at the first five minutes of the first episode.
