A remake of the classic sitcom Cheers is being developed, and it might actually save other shows from falling into a frustrating TV trend. Created by Glen and Les Charles, along with James Burrows, Cheers centered around a neighborhood bar and the colorful characters who hung out there. Thanks to its incredible cast, sharp writing, and catchy theme song, Cheers is considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time.
I remember when Cheers first aired – critics loved it, and surprisingly, a lot of people tuned in to watch! It was a huge hit for NBC. What’s amazing is that even after it finished in 1993, it stayed popular thanks to reruns and now streaming. I think that’s how a whole new generation of us discovered it, while the original fans kept enjoying it too. Because it’s still so loved, there’s been a lot of talk among fans about bringing it back, especially now that Frasier has returned.
Cheers’ UK Remake Deters From Reviving NBC’s Original Sitcom
NBC
As revealed earlier this year, Big Talk Studios is working on a UK adaptation of Cheers. Simon Nye, known for his work on shows like Men Behaving Badly and The Durrells, is writing the script. CBS Studios has given the go-ahead, and Big Talk is now pitching the idea to British TV channels. While there haven’t been many recent updates and no cast members have been announced yet, the development of this new version is positive news for fans of the original Cheers.
As a huge fan of classic TV, I’m hearing this new show isn’t connected to the original Cheers at all, which actually takes some pressure off. It’s good to know that Ted Danson and director James Burrows have both said they’re not interested in revisiting the old bar – in fact, Burrows has even stated that, in his view, Cheers is long gone! It feels like this new project allows them to do something different without constantly comparing it to the original.
Fans are still eagerly requesting a return to Sam’s pub, so there’s always hope the campaign will succeed. Fortunately, the new British version offers a similar vibe and humor for those who miss the original show.
Why The Original Cheers Should Never Be Revived Or Rebooted
NBC
Over the last few years, bringing back old shows – through reboots or revivals – has become a common way to launch new television series. Many comedies have received this treatment, like the spin-off Frasier from Cheers. However, these revivals often don’t live up to the original show, or they simply don’t attract enough viewers to stay on the air.
Cheers concluded with a satisfying finale, making a reboot challenging. Revisiting the show’s concept would be difficult without changing its tone, since it relies on the characters continuing to gather at the bar even as they get older. It’s probably best to leave Cheers as it is to avoid damaging its reputation.
