To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Twilight books, some of the actors and people who made the movies are sharing their memories as the films return to cinemas. Mackenzie Foy, who played Renesmee in Breaking Dawn Part 2 when she was just 10 years old, recently shared a funny story about being the daughter of Bella and Edward in a new interview.
Fans of the making of the Twilight films might be interested to know that for Breaking Dawn, the filmmakers initially created a life-sized, mechanical doll of Renesmee before ultimately using computer-generated imagery. Here’s what Foy, now 24 years old, remembers about the doll.
We happened to be in the same location, and I believe they protected me from whatever happened to her. It seems like they were still testing the limits of how to realistically age a baby into an adult using computer-generated imagery back then.
In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Mackenzie Foy revealed she never actually met the incredibly realistic doll created to represent Renesmee. The crew affectionately called it “Chuckesme” because it looked so much like the Chucky doll. And honestly, that was probably for the best! Those who have seen photos of Chuckesme—or even seen it in person at the Twilight museum in Forks, Washington—understand what I mean. For those who haven’t, take a look below.

I was so fascinated to learn about Renesmee’s animatronic version! The Breaking Dawn – Part 2 bonus features showed Nikki Reed – who plays Rosalie – actually holding this incredibly detailed, but creepy, doll. Apparently, it weighed about 60 pounds and took two puppeteers to operate! Nikki said it was really hard to hold for the shots. They tried filming with it, but in the end, it just didn’t look right on screen, so they went with CGI instead. It’s amazing how much work goes into making these movies!
Regardless, the character Renesmee quickly became a popular subject for internet memes. The storyline where Taylor Lautner’s Jacob Black develops romantic feelings for her, despite her young age, is one of the more bizarre aspects of the Twilight films that many fans wish had been different.
Mackenzie Foy took on the role of Renesmee when the character matured, and it was a fantastic early opportunity for the young actress – her first time working on a movie set. Foy has since shared that her fondness for Twilight has actually increased over time. She went on to appear in films like The Conjuring, played a daughter in Interstellar, and starred in Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and the 2020 adaptation of Black Beauty.
Happy Anniversary Twilight. We love you, weird CGI babies and all.
