The popular and famously violent historical series continues with a brand new trailer, giving fans their first detailed glimpse of the intense action and compelling drama to come.
The official trailer for Spartacus: House of Ashur was released on the Starz YouTube channel today, offering fans a preview of the intense action and violent scenes they can expect when the new series returns in December. You can watch the trailer below. Starz also shared a more graphic, red-band version alongside the standard trailer, hinting at the brutality to come.
The trailer showcases intense and violent combat, along with mature themes. Ashur returns to Rome, determined to rebuild his gladiator school, but finds his fighters aren’t yet strong enough. We also meet Julius Caesar (played by Jackson Gallagher) and his wife, Cordelia (Jaime Slater), and a formidable female gladiator.
I first discovered Spartacus back in 2010, and even though critics were kind of lukewarm about it at first, everyone who watched it seemed to absolutely love it! It was created by Steven S. DeKnight, who’d worked on shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville, so maybe that’s why. The show starred Andy Whitfield as Spartacus, a Thracian slave who rises up to become an amazing gladiator and eventually leads a full-blown revolt.
Andy Whitfield initially returned to play Spartacus in the prequel series, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. However, after Whitfield left the show, Liam McIntyre took over the role for Seasons 2 and 3, titled Vengeance and War of the Damned. The War of the Damned season concluded the entire Spartacus story with its final episode in 2013.
What to Know About Spartacus: House of Ashur
The upcoming series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, explores an alternate timeline: what if Ashur, a character who died in Spartacus Vengeance back in 2012, had survived? In this new story, Ashur receives Batiatus’s gladiator school as a reward for helping the Romans defeat Spartacus and end the slave revolt. He then unexpectedly empowers Achillia, a skilled female gladiator determined to succeed in a male-dominated arena. Together, they create a shocking and controversial spectacle that challenges the Roman elite.
The main cast of Spartacus: House of Ashur includes Tarabay as Korris, Tenika Davis as Achillia, and Jordi Webber as Tarchon. Simon Arblaster, Joel Abadal, Evander Brown, Cameron Rhodes, Daniel Bos, and Mikey Thompson also star. Steven S. DeKnight is the showrunner and executive producer, alongside Rick Jacobson and Aron Helbing. Lionsgate is producing the series for Starz.
Spartacus: House of Ashur premieres on STARZ on Dec. 5 with a two-episode debut.
