There are a lot of spooky options for streaming this Halloween, and Netflix has delivered a standout true crime series – surprisingly, it’s not Monster: The Ed Gein Story. They’ve released another excellent adaptation instead.
I have to say, Netflix really knocked it out of the park with The Asset last October! It’s a crime thriller, sure, but leans way more into the world of spies and action than those serial killer shows that are everywhere right now. And get this – it’s currently the third most-watched series in the world on Netflix, according to FlixPatrol. It totally took me by surprise!
What’s great about this suspenseful crime series is that you can watch all of it in a single evening. If you’re bored with typical horror movies and want something new, this popular 4-episode Netflix show is sure to please.
The Monster Of Florence Is the Perfect One-Night Halloween Binge On Netflix This Week
If you’re looking for a spooky true crime series to watch before Halloween, check out The Monster of Florence on Netflix. This 4-part miniseries, released on October 22nd, quickly became a global hit, though it recently dropped out of the top 10 most-watched shows in the U.S.
The Netflix series The Monster of Florence tells the story of one of Italy’s most famous and puzzling serial killers. In Italy, the case is as culturally significant as those of infamous American killers like Ted Bundy or the Zodiac Killer.

Instead of watching the new season of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, especially if you were waiting until closer to Halloween, you might enjoy The Monster of Florence instead. While the third season of Monster was popular on Netflix in 2025, critics didn’t like it, giving it a very low score of just 21% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I have to admit, Monster: The Ed Gein Story was a real struggle to finish. It felt so long – over eight hours! – and a lot of it just didn’t seem true to the story. But then I watched The Monster of Florence, and it was a completely different experience. At only four hours, it felt much more manageable – like enjoying a great movie followed immediately by its sequel. It was so much easier to get lost in that one!
Despite generally positive reviews from critics, viewers have had a strong reaction to The Monster of Florence – people either love it or hate it, as shown by the extreme ratings on IMDb. Luckily, it’s a relatively short series, so it’s worth watching on Netflix this week and deciding for yourself if it’s good.
