After Gen V’s Season 2 Finale, The Boys Season 5 Gets A Thrilling Update That I May Be Reading Into Too Much

Just a heads-up if you haven’t finished watching Gen V or The Boys on Amazon Prime – there are spoilers ahead! I’m so excited about this show, but I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone who’s still catching up.

With the end of Gen V‘s second season, only one superhero show seems likely to feature nudity: The Boys. Showrunner Eric Kripke recently shared an exciting – and potentially revealing – update about the show’s fifth and final season.

To clarify, nobody specifically brought up on-screen peen, so that one’s on me, in a manner of speaking. But we’ll get to perverse theorizing soon enough. For now, let’s focus on the more plainly positive part of the update that all fans should be excited to hear, which follows the creator’s appreciation for the college-set spinoff’s loyal viewership. As he put it on Instagram:

Seriously, thanks so much for watching and enjoying Gen V – and if you haven’t yet, seriously, stop what you’re doing and check it out! We’re also working super hard to finish up the final season of The Boys. I just wanted to share a quick peek at me and some of the amazing VFX team today. We’ve finished all the editing, and we’re about halfway through the visual effects, music, and color correction. It’s getting there!

Wouldn’t it have been great if the update included a definite release date and confirmation that filming was completely finished? Of course! But with a visual effects-heavy streaming series like The Boys, that’s just not realistic. So, we need to be patient while the team works hard to finish everything up.

Okay, so that wraps up what Kripke was getting at in his message. I’ve finished looking it over, and now I’m really curious to hear your thoughts – am I overthinking this, or is there actually something deeper going on?

I’m very pleased with the progress and excited to share it with you. We’re planning a big finale! Expect updates soon.

The most obvious prediction for the final season is a big showdown between Homelander and Billy Butcher’s team. That’s very likely, but the way the showrunner phrases it – “…ends with a bang. COMING…” – suggests there might be something else surprising in store as well.

Okay, setting aside the obvious silliness, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Kripke slipped a sex joke into the promo material. And honestly, I’ve got a feeling he and the writers are building towards a pretty charged ending for the whole series. It’s not just about cheap laughs, I think it’s a sign the show is heading in a bolder, more mature direction.

Given how central Compound V injections and assisted reproduction are to the storylines in The Boys and Gen V, could showrunner Eric Kripke be hinting that the series will end with a human and a Supe having a child – a new kind of hybrid being?

It’s hard to say how significant that plot point would actually be, and it probably hinges on what the Starlighters decide to do with Compound V – whether they try to eliminate it completely, or what their ultimate goals are. The conflict might not even be limited to humans versus Supes, either. Characters like Dogknott and The Deep would likely have their own perspectives on that.

Before I get too caught up in this, see how Sean Patrick Thomas (who played Polaris) and Elizabeth Tulloch (formerly Lois Lane) responded to Eric Kripke’s celebratory message.

  • Sean Patrick Thomas: Yes indeed! 🫡🫡🫡
  • Elizabeth Tulloch: 🙌

So far, there’s no word on whether Gen V will get a third season, but the story definitely has potential. While we wait, the Vought Rising prequel is still in production and announcing new cast members. We’re also hoping to find out when we can expect Season 5 of The Boys soon.
