After a lot of uncertainty, Disney and the BBC have officially announced the future of Doctor Who. The popular British sci-fi show moved to Disney in 2023, with each episode costing about $13 million to make. Now, after a two-year partnership, rumors suggest Disney won’t continue to be involved, leaving the show’s future uncertain.
The BBC has announced that Disney will no longer be involved with the Doctor Who series, marking the end of their partnership. The upcoming miniseries, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will be the last Doctor Who content available on Disney+. However, Doctor Who will continue! Russell T Davies, the show’s writer, will be returning to create a special Christmas episode in 2026.
Lindsay Salt, BBC’s Director of Drama, released a statement today expressing gratitude to Disney+ for their excellent partnership and collaboration over the last two seasons, and looking forward to the upcoming series, The War Between the Land and the Sea.
The BBC is still completely dedicated to Doctor Who, one of our most popular shows. We’re thrilled that Russell T Davies will be writing another special Christmas episode for 2026. We want to reassure fans that the Doctor isn’t going anywhere, and we’ll be sharing details about the next series soon, guaranteeing Doctor Who remains a key part of the BBC.

BBC/Disney+
As a lifelong Doctor Who fan, I have to admit the Disney partnership definitely improved the show’s production quality. But something just felt… different in the last couple of seasons. For years, Doctor Who always had this charming, resourceful vibe – like a brilliant indie production making the most of limited resources. The influx of Disney money smoothed things out, made it slicker, but honestly, it lost that special something and didn’t quite connect with me the way it used to.
Now that Disney is no longer involved and Doctor Who is back with the BBC, the show is likely to focus on its traditional style. However, Russell T Davies has a big challenge ahead for the Christmas special in 2026. Fans have been eager for explanations ever since Ncuti Gatwa’s character dramatically changed into what appeared to be Rose Tyler (played by Billie Piper) earlier this year. The ending was confusing for many, so hopefully the next special will provide some answers.
Beyond today’s news – which doesn’t fully resolve the show’s long-term future – an animated Doctor Who series for young children is officially happening. It will air on the CBeebies channel, but details about the show remain scarce beyond the initial announcement made some time ago.
