Jeremy Renner Responds to Why Marvel Fired Jonathan Majors & Not Him

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been following the Jonathan Majors situation closely. Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, recently shared his thoughts on why Marvel decided to let Majors go, despite his own past issues. It’s wild to think Majors was cast as Kang the Conqueror and even appeared in a few projects before they ultimately cut ties with him. Renner’s perspective is interesting, especially considering everything that’s happened.

Jeremy Renner says Marvel had big plans for Jonathan Majors’ Kang

During an interview on The Breakfast Club, Jeremy Renner addressed the controversies surrounding both himself and Jonathan Majors. When asked by Charlamagne tha God why Marvel chose to continue working with him while seemingly ending their relationship with Majors, Renner said he wasn’t familiar enough with Majors’ situation to comment. He acknowledged that Marvel had significant plans for Majors’ character and expressed regret over what happened, emphasizing the importance of a thorough investigation before drawing conclusions. He stated he simply didn’t have enough information to understand the decision.

This led the radio host to comment, “It just doesn’t feel right, and I’m wondering how this all unfolded.” He clarified that the two actors’ circumstances were unrelated, but he wanted to focus on Marvel’s reaction to the situation.

Renner later suggested the issue was larger than it appeared, and then spoke out against what he called “cancel culture.”

In 2019, Jeremy Renner’s ex-wife, Sonni Pacheco, publicly accused him of drug use, making death threats, and recklessly firing a gun near their daughter. Renner has consistently denied these claims. More recently, in 2024, Jonathan Majors was sentenced to 52 weeks of counseling and probation after being convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Before Jonathan Majors was fired, he starred in the 2023 Marvel movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the Disney+ show Loki. Jeremy Renner was one of the first Avengers and has been involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its very beginning. He most recently appeared in the 2024 series Echo.
