Jeremy Allen White is well-known for his television work, especially his long-running role as Lip Gallagher on Shameless and his recent Emmy-winning performance as Carmy Berzatto in The Bear. He’s also been making a name for himself in movies, and many Marvel fans have suggested him for the role of Wolverine. White recently revealed that he actually met with Marvel Studios to discuss a potential opportunity, and shared details about that conversation.
The actor has been promoting his upcoming 2025 film, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, where he portrays Bruce Springsteen. He recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with host Josh Horowitz, who asked about comments White made to GQ last year. White had described a meeting with studio executives about a potential superhero-style movie, but said they didn’t have a good answer when he asked them why he should take the role. Here’s how White reflects on that experience now:
That comment was inappropriate. It stemmed from feeling excluded and reacting defensively, like I didn’t want to participate in the first place. I admit I could have handled the situation – a meeting I had – with more tact.
It’s still unclear which Marvel movie Jeremy Allen White discussed a role in, but if the meeting took place in 2023, it was likely for one of the three Marvel films released that year. He may have been considered for the part of Bob/Sentry in Thunderbolts or Johnny Storm/Human Torch in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Regardless, White wishes he’d approached the meeting differently, and he shared his thoughts on superhero movies during a conversation with Josh Horowitz.
It’s not that the genre itself is bad, but I struggle to see where I fit within it, or what I can even bring to it. There was a time when appearing in one of these films almost guaranteed you could get any movie project approved – you could take a script to anyone and, if you believed in it, it would get made. I’m just not sure that’s still the case anymore.
The Marvel role didn’t pan out, and it’s clear Jeremy Allen White isn’t a huge fan of the superhero genre. However, could he be open to another Marvel project in the future? He is currently voicing Rotta the Hutt in The Mandalorian & Grogu, which shows he’s not against big-budget productions. When asked about recent Wolverine fancasts, here’s how Jeremy Allen White responded:
That was a wonderful performance. Hugh Jackman is truly excellent, especially considering how long he’s been doing it.
Hugh Jackman recently returned as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine after a seven-year break, and there’s talk he might continue playing the character – not just in Avengers: Secret Wars, but also in future X-Men projects within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If these reports are true, it likely means Jeremy Allen White won’t be taking on the role of Wolverine, unless he appears as an alternate version of the character. However, I’m hoping Marvel finds another role for White that he’s excited about, as it would be fantastic to see him join the franchise in some capacity.
Jeremy Allen’s portrayal of Bruce Springsteen can be seen in theaters now in the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere. Following that, The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026. Additionally, White will appear alongside Jeremy Strong, Mikey Madison, and Bill Burr in The Social Reckoning, which is also slated for a 2026 release.
