Helena Bonham Carter is famous for playing the villain Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter films, but she also appeared in a lesser-known spin-off of a classic heist movie series. Now, that spin-off is becoming available on a new streaming service.
Netflix has announced that a spin-off will premiere on November 1st. The film centers around a team of skilled female thieves who plan a bold heist during the Met Gala, targeting $150 million in diamonds. Actress Carter played Rose Weil, a former fashion designer in financial trouble with the IRS, who gets a job styling actresses at the gala, giving her inside access to the valuable jewels.
As a movie buff, I was really excited to see the cast of Ocean’s 8 – alongside Carter, it was packed with amazing actors! Sandra Bullock was fantastic as Deborah ‘Debbie’ Ocean, a pro thief and, get this, Danny Ocean’s sister from the original Ocean’s movies. And Cate Blanchett was brilliant playing Lou, Debbie’s partner in all things crime.
Beyond the eight women leading the jewel heist, Ocean’s 8 featured a fantastic supporting cast including Richard Armitage, James Corden, and Dakota Fanning. The film’s setting at the Met Gala also allowed for fun cameos from celebrities like Katie Holmes, Kim Kardashian, and other well-known fashion figures.
Released in 2018, Ocean’s 8 continued the popular Ocean’s film series after an eleven-year gap since Ocean’s Thirteen (2007). The film was both critically acclaimed and a commercial success, earning $298 million globally on a $70 million budget.
Critics generally liked Ocean’s 8, giving it a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and praising the strong connection between the actors and the film’s direction. However, audiences were more split, with a 47% approval rating based on over 10,000 reviews. Some viewers felt it didn’t quite live up to the excitement or polish of the earlier Ocean’s films, which set a high standard.
Helena Bonham Carter Has Two Mystery Projects In The Works
If you enjoyed watching Carter in thrilling heist movies, you’ll probably like her next two projects. She’s starring in a TV series called The Seven Dials Mystery, which Netflix announced in 2024 and finished filming that same year. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
I’m really excited about the next Enola Holmes movie! Helena Bonham Carter is coming back, and she’ll be playing Eudoria Holmes again. Millie Bobby Brown is, of course, back as Enola, Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, and it’s fun watching her try to make a name for herself as a detective while living in her famous brother’s shadow. We don’t have a release date for Enola Holmes 3 yet, but thankfully the first two movies are already available to stream on Netflix, so we can rewatch those while we wait!
Ocean’s 8 will arrive on Netflix on Nov. 1.
