2 Marvel Legends Say They Are Ready For An MCU Comeback In Avengers Doomsday

Two popular Marvel characters are hoping to return in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. The film is already assembling a huge cast of established Marvel heroes and villains, both from previous MCU films and other Marvel movies. However, given the epic scope Marvel is aiming for, there’s likely still space for even more characters to be added.

Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Chiklis, who starred in the Fantastic Four movies, have expressed interest in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers team. At a New York Comic-Con panel, as reported by Popverse, both actors were asked if they’d be willing to return for a large-scale crossover movie. Gruffudd, who played Reed Richards, immediately said “Absolutely, yes!”, and Chiklis (Ben Grimm) playfully roared his famous line, “It’s Clobberin’ Time!”

As a big fan of superhero flicks, I remember Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Chiklis having great chemistry as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and Ben Grimm (The Thing) in those early 2000s Fantastic Four movies. They starred together in both the 2005 original and the 2007 sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Although those actors haven’t been in any Marvel movies since, fans are still hoping they’ll reappear in the upcoming Avengers films. Many also want to see Jessica Alba reprise her role as Sue Storm and Chris Evans return as Johnny Storm – there are rumors Evans is already involved, but his appearance hasn’t been officially confirmed.

Marvel’s next Avengers film, titled Avengers: Doomsday, will kick off Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Currently, 27 actors are confirmed to star in the movie, which will bring together both current and classic heroes to prevent Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., from collapsing the multiverse. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.

Will The OG Fantastic Four Be in Avengers: Doomsday?

This isn’t the first time members of the original Fantastic Four cast have hinted at a return. Ioan Gruffudd previously stated he wasn’t involved with the Doomsday project, but would eagerly reprise his role if given the chance. Given that the next Avengers movie already features actors from past X-Men films, fans wouldn’t be surprised to see the Fantastic Four team reunite as well.

Marvel Studios has hinted at important roles for the Fantastic Four from an alternate universe (Earth-828), who were recently introduced in the upcoming 2025 film, Doomsday. Given their significant presence in that movie, it’s logical to consider that this version of the Fantastic Four could team up with the Avengers and X-Men, bringing a fresh perspective to the group.

A recent report confirms Evans is joining the film, leading many to believe he’ll reprise his role as Johnny Storm, a character he’s set to play again in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. If that’s the case, it would naturally follow that his former co-stars would also join the project.

The cast already has some understanding of Doctor Doom’s capabilities, having faced a previous version of the character – played by the late Julian McMahon – in their individual films. While they have this prior experience, Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doom is expected to be significantly more powerful and imposing than what they’ve encountered before.

The Fantastic Four will definitely play a role in the upcoming Doomsday event, regardless of exactly how their story unfolds – and it’s possible we’ll see multiple versions of the team involved.
