Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep Arrives on Netflix in November

Thirty-nine years after The Shining premiered in 1980, a follow-up movie featuring Ewan McGregor was released. Now, six years later, that sequel is coming to Netflix.

Starting November 1st, Netflix will stream Doctor Sleep, a great option for Stephen King fans looking for a spooky movie after Halloween. The film stars Ewan McGregor as Dan Torrance, a man struggling with addiction and possessing unusual psychic powers. It delves into the lasting effects of a traumatic childhood experience at the Overlook Hotel, and also features performances by Kyliegh Curran and Cliff Curtis.

Continuing the story from Stephen King’s The Shining, Doctor Sleep focuses on the life of Jack and Wendy Torrance’s son, years after the events of the original 1980 film starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Directed by Mike Flanagan, known for The Haunting of Hill House, the movie received a lot of positive attention for skillfully expanding on the world created by the original director.

Critics and audiences generally liked Doctor Sleep when it came out. Rotten Tomatoes certified the film as ‘Fresh,’ with 78% of critics giving it a positive review (based on over 340 reviews). While it’s a bit less scary than the first movie and focuses more on thoughtful themes, it still manages to be chilling and emotionally impactful.

Most viewers liked the film, as reflected by its 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 5,000 ratings. However, it didn’t do well in theaters, earning only $72.4 million worldwide despite a production cost of around $45-55 million. This was considered a disappointment, particularly when compared to the box office success of other Stephen King adaptations released that same year, like It: Chapter Two ($473 million) and Pet Sematary ($113 million).

Doctor Sleep Finds Its Audience on Streaming Years Later

Although Doctor Sleep didn’t earn a lot of money at the box office, it’s still considered one of the better movies based on a Stephen King story. Stephen King himself told this to the film’s director, Mike Flanagan. Last year, Flanagan discussed the making of the movie, including advice King gave him after it didn’t perform as well as hoped.

Mike Flanagan recalled that Stephen King pointed out how both The Shining and The Shawshank Redemption initially failed at the box office. Flanagan believes that long-term success is more important than opening weekend numbers, as many films eventually find their audience. He notes that Doctor Sleep has been well-received over time.

Stephen King fans have a lot to look forward to in 2025! We’ve already seen successful adaptations like The Monkey and The Long Walk earlier this year, and another adaptation of his action-packed dystopian novels is coming in November. Plus, a prequel series to the popular It movies, titled It: Welcome to Derry and starring Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise, will premiere on HBO October 26th.

Doctor Sleep heads to Netflix on Nov. 1.
