Blumhouse, known for horror films, will be making a movie based on the popular comic book series, ‘Something is Killing the Children.’ Created by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera, the comic—which first came out in 2019—centers around Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter who investigates the disappearances of children.
Blumhouse revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that they’re developing both a live-action movie and an animated series based on the comic book Something Is Killing the Children. They shared a video announcement stating that the project, led by JamesTheFourth, Werther Dell’Edera, and Boom Studios, will bring the modern horror comic to life in two new formats.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Blum will produce the upcoming live-action film. Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek from Blum’s company will be executive producers. Dell’Edera, a co-creator of the original series, will be a co-producer, and James Tynion IV, the other co-creator, will produce alongside Stephen Christy for Boom! Studios/Penguin Random House. Blum stated in a press release to THR:
Both readers and critics have been raving about Something is Killing the Children, and it’s easy to understand why. The comic book series by James and Werther expertly plays on our deepest fears, drawing us into a captivating world and introducing Erica Slaughter, a powerful and inspiring hero who battles the monsters hiding in the shadows – the kind of hero we all wish existed.
Series co-creator James Tynion IV added his own statement:
The comic book Something is Killing the Children had a huge impact on my life and work. It was essential to find someone who truly got the character of Erica Slaughter and the world my collaborator Werther Dell’Edera and I created, and we’ve found that in Jason Blum. Blumhouse really understands horror, and I’m excited for everyone to see what we’re working on together.
‘Something is Killing the Children’ Has the Potential to Be the Next ‘Walking Dead’
Since its debut in comic shops in September 2019, Something is Killing the Children has caught the attention of Hollywood. Netflix initially partnered with Boom! Studios in 2021 to create a TV adaptation, with Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy set to write and produce the first episode. They later left the project due to disagreements with Netflix. In 2023, the creators of the show Dark, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, joined the project, but Netflix ultimately allowed the rights to the adaptation to lapse in 2024.
Netflix attempted to regain the rights to the film, but Blumhouse ultimately won a competitive bidding process that also involved Lionsgate. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blumhouse was drawn to the project because of its resemblance to the recent successful film Weapons, which earned $267 million globally.
The comic book series Something is Killing the Children has been incredibly successful, both with critics and readers. The first issue sold 175,000 copies, and total sales have reached 5 million – numbers comparable to those of major publishers like Marvel and DC. Writer James Tynion IV has won three Eisner Awards in a row for his work on the series, which has also expanded into a larger franchise called “The Slaughterverse.” This franchise includes spinoff miniseries such as House of Slaughter and The Books of Slaughter, with another, Fall of the House of Slaughter, on the way. Many believe The Slaughterverse could become as popular as The Walking Dead, another comic that gained a devoted following and then reached a wider audience through adaptations and spinoffs.
