The Sonic the Hedgehog movies have become a major success for Paramount, going from an unexpected hit to a consistently popular and well-regarded series. With the first three films – including the latest which introduced the character Shadow and ended on a debated note – already released, attention is turning to the future. While work on a fourth movie is underway, the studio seems to be thinking about a big change – not to the story, but to the movie’s title.
According to industry insider Daniel Richtman (DanielRPK), Paramount Pictures is considering a new title for the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie, currently planned as Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Richtman reports on his Patreon that the studio is thinking of calling it simply Sonic CD, a nod to the classic 1993 Sega CD game of the same name. This title change would likely hint to fans which stories and characters from the Sonic universe the fourth film will feature.

Sonic CD is a hugely important game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series for a few key reasons: it first introduced popular characters Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, and it featured a unique time-travel system where Sonic could jump between the past, present, and future of a planet. Given that the recent movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, successfully incorporated elements from Sonic Adventure 2 (which introduced Shadow), it makes sense that the next film would likely take inspiration from Sonic CD – the only major 2D Sonic game that hasn’t been adapted yet.
Fans are really excited about the upcoming appearances of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic in the next Sonic movie. A story involving time travel could let the filmmakers delve deeper into the rich history and lore of the Sonic universe. Though the movie isn’t due out until March 19, 2027, development on Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is now officially underway.
Why Sonic CD Might Not Be a Great Idea

Although the name Sonic CD might excite longtime fans, changing the movie’s title from Sonic the Hedgehog 4 could be a mistake for the hugely successful film series, especially as it reaches a wider audience. The studio’s decision to use Sonic CD is concerning because it could confuse viewers and weaken the movie’s brand.
Changing the naming convention so late in the series could be confusing for viewers. The current films – Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 – have created a simple, easy-to-follow order. Calling the fourth movie Sonic CD breaks that pattern, making it seem less like a continuation of the story and more like a separate spin-off, a fresh start, or a one-off film – which could be confusing for people who haven’t played the games.
The number “4” signals that the central storyline is continuing, now featuring the Wachowski family alongside characters like Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow. Titles formatted like Sonic CD usually indicate spin-off stories—think of the potential Keanu Reeves story—rather than being part of the main movie series.
Importantly, the name Sonic CD comes from the Sega CD, a device released in 1993 that used Compact Discs. This technology isn’t widely used anymore.
The Sonic movies are aimed at a new generation of fans who didn’t grow up with the original games. These younger viewers likely discovered Sonic through streaming, digital downloads, and modern movies, rather than the classic consoles of the 1990s – they might not even know what a ‘CD’ is!
The current title doesn’t offer enough background and might seem like a random set of letters instead of a respectful nod to longtime fans. While a title like Sonic CD would appeal to those familiar with the game, it could confuse or exclude the large international audience that has made the movie series so successful.
