Recent box office numbers for Tron: Ares are concerning, and it’s performing worse than many Disney films. While released in early October, the latest sci-fi sequel had a weak opening weekend, earning only $33 million. This fell short of the expected $40 million, which would have matched the performance of the 2010 film, Tron: Legacy.
Following its three-week run in cinemas, Tron: Ares is projected to earn $63.1 million in the United States and Canada. The film saw a significant drop in ticket sales this week – down 58% – bringing in $4.5 million from 2,940 theaters. Despite this decline, Tron: Ares is now expected to outperform Disney’s Fantasia 2000, which earned $60 million domestically when it was released in 1999.

Plus, Tron: Ares is projected to become one of Disney’s top-grossing domestic films, landing at number 231. This puts it slightly behind Nicolas Cage’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice ($63.15 million) and just ahead of Miley Cyrus’ The Last Song ($62.9 million).
Despite an estimated production budget of $180 to $220 million, early reports suggest the new film Tron: Ares could lose as much as $132 million in theaters. Although the third Tron movie is performing better than the first, it’s not expected to reach the $409 million worldwide gross of Tron: Legacy.
| Tron Movies | Domestic Box Office |
|---|---|
| Tron (1982) | $33,000,000 |
| Tron: Legacy (2010) | $172,062,763 |
| Tron: Ares (2025) | $63,100,000 |
The poor box office results for Ares follow a challenging year for Disney. Although the Lilo & Stitch remake reached $1 billion in earnings, that success hasn’t made up for the disappointing performance of other films like Snow White, Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps.
However, Warner Bros., their main competitor, has been very successful, achieving a remarkable streak of seven films each earning over $40 million.
Joachim Rønning directed Tron: Ares, which stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Hasan Minhaj. Jeff Bridges reprises his role in this third film in the Tron series.
Reviews for Ares were mixed, earning a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics finding fault with Jared Leto’s performance and the story itself. The film’s visual effects and music were generally praised, though. Viewers seemed to enjoy it more, giving it an 89% rating on Popcornmeter. Despite this, the film didn’t perform well in theaters, leading experts to wonder what went wrong.
Despite the challenges, the future of the franchise doesn’t look promising, and a recent article in The Hollywood Reporter suggests this could be the end of the series. However, like the film Thunderbolts, there’s still a possibility the movie could find success through streaming. Disney has now confirmed a streaming release date.
