Mike Flanagan has finished filming his new TV series based on Stephen King’s Carrie. Flanagan is known for adapting King’s work – he’s previously brought Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck to the screen as movies. He’s also currently developing The Dark Tower books into a TV series.
The TV series Carrie stars Summer Howell as Carrie White, with Samantha Sloyan playing Margaret White. Siena Agudong is Sue Snell, and Alison Thornton portrays Chris Hargensen. Matthew Lillard plays Principal Grayle, Amber Midthunder is Miss Desjardin, Arthur Conti is Billy Nolan, and Joel Oulette plays Tommy Ross. Katee Sackhoff and Rahul Kohli are also in the cast, but their characters haven’t been announced yet.
Filming for the Prime Video miniseries, which began in June with Carrie, has officially finished, according to director Mike Flanagan. He announced the wrap on Instagram with a photo of his director’s chair – designed to look bloodied and signed by star Howell and many other members of the cast.
Flanagan shared that working on Carrie was a fantastic experience, highlighting the incredible cast and expressing his excitement for viewers to finally see the series. You can read his full post below.
The TV series based on Carrie was originally planned for release in 2026, and now that filming is finished, it’s on track to meet that date. The show progressed rapidly – it was first reported as being developed in October 2024, officially greenlit by Prime Video in April, and is now moving into the editing and finishing stages.
Stephen King’s 1974 novel Carrie has been adapted for the screen several times before. The most well-known version is the 1976 film with Sissy Spacek, but there was also a sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, a TV movie in 2002, and another film in 2013 starring Chloë Grace Moretz. However, Mike Flanagan’s version is the first to be presented as a multi-episode television series.
Look, Carrie has been adapted before, but director Mike Flanagan – who clearly knows how to get great performances, as evidenced by his frequent collaborator Justin Lillard – seems to have really found a fresh angle. Lillard hinted that Flanagan believes he’s figured out how to make this classic story resonate with today’s audiences. And everyone’s raving about the lead actress, with Flanagan himself saying her performance is completely unique. He’s promising to stay true to the heart of Stephen King’s novel, but also isn’t afraid to make some significant changes to bring it into the modern day. It sounds like a really interesting take!
Given the exciting previews, the rapid pace of development, and the success of Mike Flanagan’s previous Stephen King adaptations, there’s a lot of excitement for all eight episodes of the Carrie series.
