Jonathan Jackson’s Lucky Spencer Return: Fixing General Hospital’s Storyline Issues

Jonathan Jackson, known for playing Lucky Spencer on General Hospital, recently won a Daytime Emmy Award on October 17, 2025, recognizing his outstanding performance in a supporting role. He’s back with the show after a nine-year break, having rejoined the cast in August 2024, and is now in a position to address a long-standing issue.

Fans were disappointed with Jackson’s recent return to General Hospital, feeling the storylines he was given didn’t do the character justice. While Lucky was brought back to Port Charles as a potential liver donor for his sister, Lulu Spencer (Alexa Havins), the plot involved him being held captive in Africa by Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota). Even after returning, he couldn’t donate because his liver wasn’t healthy enough.

Lucky narrowly escaped death when Cyrus Renault poisoned him with digitalis while Lucky was investigating a murder. Renault also concealed Kristina Corinthos’s sabotage of Ric Lansing’s car brakes, mistakenly believing she was acting on behalf of Ava Jerome. This led to a serious car accident that badly injured both Ric and Elizabeth. Despite the severity of the crash, Elizabeth chose not to pursue charges against Kristina, fearing repercussions for Lucky.

Lucky and Elizabeth were falling in love again, but when he proposed, she declined, explaining they had different goals for the future. Afterwards, Lucky took their son, Aiden (played by Colin Cassidy), and embarked on a journey around the world.

Everyone was excited about Jackson’s return, but his comeback was disappointing. Many of his storylines didn’t go anywhere and felt pointless. While he reconnected with his mother, Laura Collins, and his sister Lulu (who woke up after being in a coma for four years), he never quite felt like a full part of the Spencer family again.

The breakup of Lucky and Elizabeth was particularly upsetting for fans, given their long history as one of the most beloved couples on General Hospital. They’ve married twice and repeatedly reunited, but their recent storyline felt like a misstep. Despite that, Jackson is open to bringing Lucky back for a plot that could redeem his previous return.

Jonathan Is Open To Returning To General Hospital

There’s One Storyline He Wouldn’t Refuse

As a big fan of General Hospital, I was sad to see Lucky leave when Jonathan Jackson wanted to focus on family. But I was really happy to read in TV Insider that he’s definitely open to coming back, even for just one storyline! He said he’d love to return for a memorial episode honoring Dr. Lesley Webber, who played his grandmother on the show. It would be a beautiful tribute to Denise Alexander, and I’d absolutely love to see it happen.

It’s been so hard since Alexander passed away at 85 on March 5th, 2025. She was such a big part of the show as Lesley, starting back in 1973 and staying until 1984. Then, thankfully, she came back for another long run from 1996 to 2009, with some lovely appearances in 2013, 2017, 2019, and 2021. I was really touched when Jackson said he’d be honored to bring his character, Lucky, back to pay tribute to his grandmother. It would be a beautiful way to remember her!

Bringing Lucky back to General Hospital to deal with the death of Lesley would be a good way to explain his long absence. His last departure felt sudden, but a return to Port Charles for such a sad event could emphasize his ties to Laura and Lulu, and potentially rekindle his relationship with Elizabeth.

The story could also demonstrate the strong connection Lucky has with his son, Aiden. It would be surprising if Lucky wasn’t actively involved in Aiden’s life, so exploring their bond would be a heartwarming way to reunite Lucky with his family.

Jackson is a hugely popular and well-known actor on General Hospital. He first started playing the character of Lucky Spencer on October 19, 1993, at the age of 11, as the son of legendary characters Luke and Laura Spencer (played by Anthony Geary and Genie Francis). Jackson played Lucky in several periods – from 1993 to 1999, 2009 to 2011, in 2015, and most recently. While two other actors have taken on the role of Lucky, many fans believe Jackson is the most memorable and best portrayal of the character.

Jonathan has received six Daytime Emmy Awards for his work as Lucky, including three wins for being the best younger actor in a drama series (1995, 1998, and 1999), and three awards for best supporting actor (2011, 2012, and 2025). Although the show has recast the role twice in the past, Jonathan should always be the first choice to play Lucky because he was the original actor and truly made the character memorable.

Despite weak storylines, Jackson’s recent Emmy win for playing Lucky proves just how talented he is. He consistently delivers strong performances and is a vital asset to General Hospital.

A recent storyline for Lucky on General Hospital didn’t quite work, leaving fans feeling unsatisfied. A good way to revisit the character would be to have him appear at a memorial service for Lesley. The actor who plays Lucky is interested in returning, and it could give the character a meaningful reunion with his family. Bringing Lucky and Jackson back to the show would make General Hospital feel more complete.
