9-1-1’s Crossover With Nashville Proves Where Lone Star Went Wrong

Just three episodes into its ninth season, 9-1-1 has already done a crossover event, and the positive reaction highlights a key issue with 9-1-1: Lone Star. While the hit show 9-1-1 has created two spin-offs – 9-1-1: Lone Star and the newer 9-1-1: Nashville – crossovers between the shows haven’t happened very often, despite taking place in the same world.

Despite being connected, 9-1-1: Lone Star only appeared with the original 9-1-1 series once during its five seasons. The spin-off never had a complete crossover event with its parent show. However, there’s hope the new spin-off, 9-1-1: Nashville, will have more crossover opportunities, and it’s already showing promise in that area.

Maddie Called Cammie For Help

In a surprising crossover, Kimberly Williams-Paisley reprised her role as Cammie Raleigh from 9-1-1: Nashville in season 9, episode 3 of 9-1-1, titled “The Sky is Falling.” Early in the episode, Maddie Han asked Cammie for assistance when communication was lost with Athena Grant and Henrietta “Hen” Wilson, who were facing a dangerous situation on a ship in space.

The spacecraft drifted too far away, meaning Maddie and Karen wouldn’t be able to reach the crew for over an hour and a half. Knowing they couldn’t wait that long, Maddie called 9-1-1 in Nashville, hoping to reach Athena and Hen, whose spacecraft was currently flying over the city. Luckily, Cammie Williams-Paisley answered Maddie’s call.

As a total movie buff, I was hooked on 9-1-1: Nashville when things got crazy for Cammie and her team – a massive storm with tornadoes was hitting! But when Maddie described the situation in Los Angeles as “raining fire,” Cammie knew she had to jump in and help. She immediately had someone grab a satellite phone and head to the roof to get in touch with Athena and Hen. It was a tense moment, even for me watching it!

The character from 9-1-1: Nashville contacted the space team and connected them with Maddie and Karen in Los Angeles. Cammie then likely returned to handling emergencies in Nashville. Though her appearance was short, it was a fun surprise to see her on 9-1-1 so early in the season, and no one predicted a crossover between the two shows so soon.

9-1-1: Lone Star Didn’t Cross Over With 9-1-1 Until Season 2

It was exciting to see Cammie on an episode of 9-1-1. Williams-Paisley’s guest appearance in season 9, episode 3, quickly linked 9-1-1 with its spinoff, 9-1-1: Nashville. In contrast, characters from 9-1-1: Lone Star didn’t begin interacting with the original 9-1-1 cast until the second season of Lone Star.

In season 2, episode 3 of 9-1-1: Lone Star, Hen, Buck, and Eddie went to Texas to help Station 126 fight wildfires. As expected, they faced some dangerous situations while there and got to know the characters from the Lone Star show. However, by the end of the episode, they returned home, and the two 9-1-1 series didn’t team up again after that.

The second season of the spinoff had one episode that briefly connected back to the original series, but it felt like too little, too late. The episode itself wasn’t particularly memorable and didn’t generate much enthusiasm for a shared universe between the shows. This lack of impact was a weakness for 9-1-1: Lone Star.

A character from 9-1-1: Nashville showed up on the original 9-1-1 series first. This was different from how the 9-1-1: Lone Star crossover with 9-1-1 worked – in that case, the Lone Star character appeared on 9-1-1 first. Since 9-1-1: Lone Star needs to attract more viewers, especially fans of the original 9-1-1, featuring a character from the newer show on the flagship series is a way to help it gain popularity.

Small Crossovers Aren’t Enough

I was so excited to see Williams-Paisley on 9-1-1 – it really got me hoping we’d see more characters crossing over between the different 9-1-1 shows! 9-1-1: Lone Star didn’t really deliver on that front, so now I’m really eager to see 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville team up for a major crossover event. It feels like it’s time for a big collaboration between these two shows!

The 9-1-1 series could benefit from the kind of big, interconnected events that One Chicago regularly does. It might be harder to pull off, though, because 9-1-1 is filmed in Los Angeles and 9-1-1: Nashville is filmed in Tennessee. One Chicago has an advantage – all three of its shows are filmed in Chicago, making it much simpler to have characters appear across different series.

Even though both shows aren’t known for being completely realistic, a crossover event between 9-1-1 and its spin-off is definitely possible. The story doesn’t need to be perfectly logical, just compelling enough to unite the casts and create a large-scale emergency. Cammie’s potential appearance in season 9 of 9-1-1 is a good start, but the franchise could benefit from even more ambitious crossovers.

Season 9 of 9-1-1 premieres on ABC Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern Time, with the first season of 9-1-1: Nashville airing right after at 9 PM Eastern Time.
