Stellan Skarsgård Would’ve Done Andor Season 3, Despite Asking To Be Killed Off

Stellan Skarsgård is a well-known actor with a long and successful career, including memorable roles in films like Good Will Hunting, Dune, and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as the series Andor. Many believe he’s likely to receive his first Oscar nomination next year for his work in the drama Sentimental Value. While he’s primarily a film actor, his two-season role in Star Wars was a significant achievement, and he was initially unsure about committing to a lengthy television project.

Created by Tony Gilroy, a co-writer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Andor is a gripping and politically charged thriller that expands the Star Wars universe. The show follows Diego Luna as Cassian Andor in the years before the events of the original 1977 film. Bill Skarsgård plays Luthen Rael, a rebel intelligence officer who brings Cassian into the fight against the Empire.

Originally, creator Tony Gilroy envisioned Andor lasting five seasons, which almost made Alexander Skarsgård hesitant to join the project. Skarsgård was skeptical about committing to the Star Wars universe at first, but Gilroy convinced him it would be a more nuanced take on the franchise, and guaranteed Skarsgård could leave after two years if the show continued beyond that point.

Check out Skarsgård’s comments below:

I initially asked if the show was like “Star Wars.” Tony Gilroy explained it would be a more realistic and grounded story, focusing on believable characters in believable settings, and he delivered on that. My main worry was the long-term commitment, so I asked if he planned to be the showrunner and writer for the entire seven-year run. He avoided a direct answer at first, but eventually admitted he couldn’t guarantee that, only a two-year commitment. I then asked if he’d agree to write my character off the show after two seasons if I wanted, and he assured me he would.

Ultimately, Gilroy and his team decided to end Andor after two seasons, which meant Skarsgård was no longer needed for the role. However, Skarsgård later told Vulture that he’d reconsidered his initial feelings about leaving and would have happily continued with the show for another season, saying, “I wasn’t bored with it.”

Many fans consider Andor to be the strongest Star Wars television series, even though the show had to be shortened, resulting in some scenes being removed. There was plenty of story left to tell, and a third season could have worked well. Specifically, the character Luthen could have continued to be important if the show had delved further into the events surrounding the timeframe of season 2.

Despite its flaws, the show was incredibly influential, and many wonder if Star Wars can ever be as groundbreaking again. Thankfully, the people who worked on it are now free to take on new challenges. For example, Alexander Skarsgård is collaborating with Joachim Trier on a film called Sentimental Value, and Tony Gilroy is developing a new movie, Behemoth, featuring Pedro Pascal, David Harbour, and Eva Victor.

Experts predict Sentimental Value will receive several Academy Award nominations for acting, Best Picture, Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, with the strongest possibility of winning in the International Feature category, as it won’t be up against major competitors like One Battle After Another and Sinners. Despite the film’s artistic success, many fans still express a desire to have seen more of Skarsgård’s performance in Andor.
