There are few things more satisfying than a great movie, and even better when it’s available to watch for free. Luckily, a truly excellent film is coming to a free streaming platform soon.
Starting November 1st, you can watch Bruce Willis’s popular 1996 film, Last Man Standing, on Tubi for free. Directed by Walter Hill, the movie offers a dark and gritty spin on the traditional Western tale of a lone hero. Willis plays John Smith, a quiet stranger who arrives in the rough border town of Jericho during the Prohibition era. His quick stop soon turns dangerous as he finds himself caught between two warring gangs – the Irish and Italian mobs – who are battling for control of the illegal alcohol business.
Following a classic, somewhat ruthless pattern – reminiscent of 1930s gangster films – Smith tries to benefit from the disorder around him, looking out for himself. Walter Hill’s vision for Last Man Standing began in an unexpected way. He was approached by producer Arthur Sarkassian about updating a 1961 movie that had previously influenced Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars.
Walter Hill initially thought adapting Akira Kurosawa’s work was a crazy idea, as he told CanWest News. However, he reconsidered when he discovered Kurosawa actually wanted an American remake. Instead of simply making a classic Western, Hill set the story in Texas during Prohibition, mixing elements of gangster films with the traditional Wild West showdowns.
Production wasn’t without its challenges. While Bruce Willis and director Walter Hill maintained a professional working relationship, it was reportedly somewhat cold. Hill later shared that he enjoyed working with Willis, but sensed an underlying resentment. He believed Willis felt undervalued and wished he’d received more recognition for his abilities.
Before becoming Last Man Standing, the film went through several working titles, including “Gundown,” “Gangster,” and “Welcome to Jericho.” The production, costing $67 million, focused on creating a strong mood through detailed sets and carefully planned gunfights. The first version of the film was over two hours long and included different endings and extra scenes, but these were cut to make the movie flow better.
Last Man Standing Finally Found Its Audience
Although Last Man Standing aimed high, it didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $18.1 million in the US and $47.3 million globally – far less than anticipated. Reviews were mixed, currently sitting at 44%. However, over time, the film has gained a dedicated following who see it as one of Bruce Willis’s most overlooked works.
Now that Bruce Willis has retired, this film offers a great look back at his acting skills during a particularly strong period in his career. If you enjoy classic action movies – the kind that relied on strong performance instead of flashy special effects or constant jokes – Last Man Standing shows how powerful a subtle approach can be.
