With Halloween just around the corner, a great way to get into the spirit is with a movie from HBO Max. They have a huge library – over 800 films – so choosing what to watch can be tough!
As Halloween approaches, many people start watching scary movies, and HBO Max has a great selection. We especially recommend checking out a film by a promising new directing duo. Their first movie received excellent reviews, and their latest one might be even better!
We highly recommend checking out a truly exceptional superhero film that remains popular with fans. Finally, we suggest a classic, suspenseful detective movie directed by a well-respected filmmaker.
Se7en (1995)
David Fincher is widely considered one of Hollywood’s most talented directors. He’s known for acclaimed films like Gone Girl, The Social Network, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But many believe his masterpiece is actually Se7en, despite it not receiving major awards recognition.
Released in 1995, the film Se7en follows two detectives as they hunt a serial killer who is targeting people based on the seven deadly sins. While the story is compelling, it’s director David Fincher’s skillful direction, the strong performances from the actors, and the unexpected plot twists that truly make the movie stand out.
As a huge movie fan, I was so excited to see Morgan Freeman take on the role of a detective nearing retirement, and Brad Pitt as his fresh, new partner. Honestly, their chemistry is incredible – they really light up the screen together! And the movie is made even better by fantastic supporting actors like Gwyneth Paltrow and R. Lee Ermey.
When Se7en came out, critics loved it, and it’s only grown in popularity since then. The shocking ending, famous for the line “What’s in the box?”, is considered one of the most disturbing in film history, solidifying the movie’s place as a standout from the 1990s.

Superhero movies have become hugely successful, largely due to the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the MCU kicked off with Iron Man in 2008, DC responded with The Dark Knight, which many still consider the greatest superhero movie ever made, despite numerous releases since then.
Following the first film, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight is the second movie in Christopher Nolan’s Batman series. Unlike the first film which showed Batman’s beginnings, The Dark Knight features a Batman who’s already a well-known figure in Gotham City, and many consider it the best on-screen portrayal of the character so far.
The movie The Dark Knight features an epic battle between Batman and the Joker. It also tells the tragic story of Harvey Dent, Gotham’s District Attorney, and his transformation into the criminal Two-Face. The film was a huge commercial and critical success, earning over $1 billion and significantly influencing superhero movies that followed.
Most people have seen The Dark Knight by now, and it holds up really well on repeat viewings, especially during this time of year. Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as the Joker is particularly mesmerizing and remains a highlight of the superhero genre.
Bring Her Back (2025)

After gaining attention for their work on YouTube, Danny and Michael Philippou quickly established themselves as promising new directors with their debut feature film, Talk to Me. Released a few years ago, the movie has been widely praised and is considered one of the strongest horror films of recent times.
Everyone was eager to see if the students’ second film would be as good as hoped. Thankfully, Bring Her Back delivered, and was truly excellent. The film was both a commercial success and a critical darling, earning a strong 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming popular on HBO Max.
In Bring Her Back, a brother and sister who are blind are left orphaned and sent to live with a foster mother. Soon after arriving, they begin to suspect something is very wrong, as their foster mother is still deeply mourning the loss of her own child. The events that unfold are truly frightening.
Like their previous film, Talk to Me, Bring Her Back offers truly frightening moments, but it’s the movie’s exploration of grief, family, and loss that really stands out. Horror fans should definitely see Bring Her Back and keep an eye on future projects from directors Danny and Michael Philippou.
