Although many people think of Gilmore Girls as the ultimate fall show, there’s a strong case to be made for another season being even more central to the story of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. This isn’t to say the show isn’t linked to autumn – with the fall foliage in the opening credits and all the seasonal activities in Stars Hollow, Gilmore Girls definitely captures that cozy, sweater weather feeling.
Last September, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, stars of Gilmore Girls, came together at the Emmy Awards to present, and Graham playfully mentioned that their show seemed to “own” the fall season. The show also recently marked its 25th anniversary on October 5th, perfectly embracing the cozy autumn vibe. But fans shouldn’t forget how significant another season—winter—is to the Gilmore Girls story.
Gilmore Girls Became A Winter Show With Lorelai’s Iconic “I Smell Snow” Quote
Lots of shows have tried to capture the magic of Gilmore Girls, but none have succeeded, mainly because they haven’t been able to recreate its incredibly cozy atmosphere. Think warm sweaters, hot coffee, and movie nights with takeout – those comforting scenes feel perfect for both winter and fall.
The show Gilmore Girls truly became known for its cozy winter atmosphere in season one, episode eight, “Love and War and Snow,” when Lorelai Gilmore famously said, “I smell snow.” This line perfectly captures the charming spirit of the show and its main character, highlighting Lorelai’s cheerful and hopeful outlook. To her, snow represents magic, joy, and loveliness.
In season 5, episode 11 of Gilmore Girls, titled “Women of Questionable Morals,” Lorelai famously says, “I smell snow.” By this point in the series, Lorelai and Luke are already dating, and she excitedly wakes him up to share the first snowfall of the season.
This scene really shows off Luke and Lorelai’s classic relationship – Luke’s a bit of a grump who just wants to sleep, but he goes along with Lorelai’s energy because it makes her so happy, even if it means briefly being cold. Later, when Lorelai is feeling down, Luke tries to lift her spirits by building her an ice rink, which leads to their memorable skating scene together.
While others might dislike cold, wet weather, Lorelai finds that it often coincides with the happiest moments in her life. She openly states that winter is her favorite season, and this preference reveals a lot about the main character of Gilmore Girls.
“The Bracebridge Dinner” Is Gilmore Girls’ Coziest Episode
Though Gilmore Girls has many wonderful episodes set in autumn, like those marking the start of school for Rory or the hectic task of attending four Thanksgiving meals, the show’s most comforting episode actually takes place in winter.
That episode is season 2, episode 10, titled “The Bracebridge Dinner.” It features Lorelai and Sookie hosting a big gathering at the Independence Inn when a holiday convention gets stuck in Boston due to a snowstorm. The episode centers around the idea of enjoying time with family and friends, and how being together can be especially comforting during cold weather.
“The Bracebridge Dinner” really captures the cozy winter feeling, with a grand seven-course meal inspired by Old English traditions and fun sleigh rides. Beyond the charming atmosphere, this episode is important for several characters: Emily finds out Richard has retired, and both Luke & Lorelai and Rory & Jess share special romantic moments during the sleigh rides.
More Than One Gilmore Girls Star Has Said The Next Sequel Should Be A Christmas Movie
Despite being a warm and comforting show like Gilmore Girls, it doesn’t actually have many Christmas episodes. While some storylines happen around Christmas time, there’s never a dedicated holiday episode. This actually highlights how much the show embodies winter in general, being strongly linked to the snowy season without needing to focus on Christmas specifically.
Both Lauren Graham and Sally Struthers, who played Babette, agree that a future Gilmore Girls sequel should be a Christmas movie. In the upcoming documentary Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, Struthers expressed her wish to see what’s happening in Stars Hollow during the holidays, saying it would be wonderful to reconnect with the characters.
While at the Emmys, where she presented alongside Alexis Bledel, Lauren Graham talked about a potential future project for the Gilmore Girls franchise. She told The Hollywood Reporter that she’s always thought a Christmas movie would be a perfect fit for the show’s world and characters.
Okay, so there aren’t any official plans for another Gilmore Girls show right now, but I recently heard about an idea from Sean Graham and Katherine Struthers, and it sounds amazing! They think it would fit perfectly into the Gilmore Girls world. Honestly, it would be so good to see what happened to everyone after that frustrating ending in A Year in the Life, and it might even make me love winter episodes more than fall ones – that’s how good it could be!
